Yeah, I don't really know what to do about it, other than change the oil regularly at shorter intervals(already do that). And change the filter regularly. I haven't been able to diagnose where the sound is coming from, or where the shavings are from. I thought maybe it was due to the leak, and I had let the oil get to low. The leak is fixed now so we will see what happens.

I've heard Subaru of America has a remedy in some cases but it involves a new set of pistons. My 2001 does the same thing. Break-in is important !!!, don't over rev and drive in short spurts with cool downs between. Think "Heat Cycles" , and break in according to MFG. Also for those symptomatic motors, warm up is important, block heater is awesome in winter. Don't over-rev and you may get a long service life. I'm thinking at least until head gasket issues happen and then it's time for pistons also. Then ur ready for another 300 K !!!
