Tell them you will only accept a full engine replacement. This engine has potentially run 3,000 miles without adequate oil pressure/supply? You will also be subject to an engine with no QC checks, only the skill and experience of a dealership mechanic. No way I would accept a short block.

there have been reports of cracked/failed pick-up tubes in older models. some just have low pressure or aspirate some air with the oil. some have reportedly failed completely.
maybe whoever brazes these parts for Subaru still has some quality lapses? Broken OEM Oil pickup... Pictures - NASIOC

I would agree with a full engine swap, not just a short block. It has nothing to do with QC, because apparently the current engine passed. It is more to do with lack of lubrication to the lifters, cams and valve train. It may not "appear" to have damage, but if there is damage at the crank there is wear else wear that a 3k mile engine should not have that may cause issue later.
What does SOA have to say about a short block only? Have you talked to the rep there? Also, not to be too pessimistic but the tech can bill more hours with a short block swap over a long block and get paid more. Even under a warranty claim. So there could be some other factors involved in this decision. |

Wrong, until the car has been out of service for 30 days, period. Has nothing to do with working days. What state are you in? Also, implied warranty falls into effect. Go for a new car. You will also have diminution of value if shown on a car fax. |

Further more, Corporation, or dealer has three times to fix it, then it goes to a panel of individuals for a round table discussion before any new vehicle is given, it's a little more than one may think, different rules for different states. I'm in IN.

The way I've read the Vermont law it's 30 days within a rolling calendar year for the same problem, does not state working days.
I plan to call soa today. They don't open till 10:30 am on Fridays. I do agree replacing the short block is not the correct thing to do. The entire engine would have been compromised being starved of oil. Any tips on how to get through the red tape at SOA? I'm just one of several million subaru owners. I do agree the car will be devalued when the repair/or swap shows on those car reporting companies. Thanks, Ed |

Hi, got off the phone with SOA and they will investigate. They did confirm as reported by the dealer the oil pick up tube was not installed/ missing.
I'm not sure when a car is in motion the oil moves enough in the pan to feed it intermittently thus running it 3000 miles versus instant lock up. But, the case is being investigated. I did stress my concern for the replacement of the short block versus a full swap as an oil starved engine would be totally compromised not just the block. Thanks |

I would accept nothing less than a new engine - it needs more than a shortblock. (for a scew up like this, I am surprised they haven't offered a replacement vehicle... did you ask?)
