I'm thinking it's fuel related too.. that's why I wanted to replace fuel filter 1st and hope that the pump is ok. When I run the engine, it smells strongly of gas under hood.. is this normal I wonder?

Okay, now we are on to something different. If you smell gas it is either a leak or the car is not firing to burn the gas and its coming from the tailpipe.

Coil, plugs, wires.

I would check all the fuel lines, the car is old enough, may be even worth it just to replace them. At least check all the clamps. What condition is the engine oil in, what does it smell like?

Well this is assuming the engine timing is spot on.
