01 Limited Edition with just over 140k on it. CEL with 1443 code.
Seeing here where it is the gas cap. But I also watched this (from this site):
Charcoal Canister Vent Valve Replacement, P1443 - Video
Here it seems (conclusion not clear) that he DID replace the solenoid (the $80 part at the very end). I didn't like how he ohmed it out. He got 2? What's that? I also found this ....
Which is for a Forrester, but parts seem the same as in my '01 Outback. He Ohms it out and says it should read 30 to 50 ohms. Well, here's what I did....
Getting the thing off is cake. So I cleaned it carefully before disassembly. Took the solenoid out. Checked the hoses for grime (clean inside). And then checked the resistance of my (bad?) solenoid. 27 ohms, so less than the minimum in second video. I did not have a power probe, so I plugged it back up and energized it with the test circuit enabled. (Green plug underneath driver console right next to center console like in second video).
It sealed well and seemed to cycle fine. So I put it back. Where I am at, part has to be ordered. I cleared the fault code and at this point, I am going to watch and see - get some time on the vehicle. If it's the solenoid, I figure I will get the fault again in a day or two. It MAY be that the cleaning of it and reseating of it fixed it.
If the fault comes back, I will probably check the gas cap first. Figuring transfer blue will let me know if it is not sealing. Then replace this thing second. Will post back with what happened.
Again - this is an easy piece to replace, so no worries. Other than the cost of it.
EDIT - OK, been a couple of weeks now or so, no more CEL. I think mine came on because I topped off the tank and cleaning it well seemed to have fixed it.
