Actually...the Bob's Road reference I know dates back earlier. Nissan did a series of commercials in the late 80s or early 90s of a guy (Bob) and that buying a Nissan was like having your own road....hence the name.

I don't know if the term was used before that...and Nissan just lifted the term.

Got a $1,170 for the dent and scuffed door guard. Refinished the door guard myself with OEM paint and my paint gun for $20. Got $4,600 for the car. Walked away with $5,750 in my pocket. The goal was to get $5,500 for the car. Profit.

I paid $4900 for my 98 with (at the time) 139,XXX miles. I feel like I got a deal since this thing was a 1 owner car who traded for a new OB and this one was so well maintained.

I worked at a car STEALERSHIP for a few weeks (couldnt deal with lying to people and taking advantage of them) and one of the many things I learned was "its not the deal the customer gets, its the deal you make them THINK they are getting."
That opened my eyes when it comes to buying cars, even from private sellers. Now I feel like I wont get steamrolled when I go into a dealer looking at cars. So, regardless of what KBB says, its mostly based on the quality and maintaince of the vehicle, cleanliness, and drivability that makes or breaks an asking price.

Just because one person says your asking price is too high based solely on what a third party says its worth (KBB) doesnt mean its not worth that. Like you mentioned, its also demand in the area you are trying to sell.

Take for instance my 99 Jeep Wrangler lifted and set up for off road. Around San Fran I got very few hits, but as soon as I posted it on Craigslist near the Oregon border I was FLOODED with emails and calls. I was asking almost $3000 OVER KBB and people were lining up from other states to purchase. However back in the Bay area I had a guy try to low ball me asking to give me $1500 BELOW KBB. I ended up selling to a guy (who I never met face to face) who hired a driver to drive down, conduct the transaction and haul the Jeep away from over 300 miles away. Thats how bad he wanted my Jeep. If you have the time, youll find the perfect buyer who will be willing to pay your asking price.

So there you have it, its based more on demand and desire of the buyers than what others have to say.

Good on you for getting above what you wanted, I for one wouldve liked to seen your car if I hadnt just bought my 98 (and if yours wasnt a girly transmission)

I hear ya. I got a ton of calls/emails from my ad on Craigslist, but many were local lowballers. I was getting people from Colorado, Minnesota, and Wisconsin inquiring as well within the last week when temps started falling, but that never materialized. What was odd was that when I put the car on cars.com, I got lots of calls from out of state Subaru dealerships wanting the car, but they were wanting near trade-in prices. It got annoying.

It is AMAZING what the stealerships still want for an OB or GT Legacy. I like the ones that try to say GTs are rare....REALLY? The dealers still want $7000 on 1997-1999 OB that have over 130,000 miles and they don't even offer a warranty. PLEASE.

Now, that price is more in line with what I would have offered...if it was in the NW.

See...if I lived closer, I'd almost go for that car (I'm now in need), even though the HG hasn't been replaced yet. If it was red and I had the money...I'd even fly out to get it. The book value isn't everything. In fact if you read the price guides...excellent condition cars are expected to go over even the top value. Additionally, GTs are worth more and sell for way more than the Outbacks.

Did the car ever sell?
