Despite hot sales for its two North American-built models, Subaru says that a shortage of Japan-sourced parts will require it to cut production at its Lafayette, Indiana, assembly plant.
Subaru will cut four hours from each of the plant’s two daily shifts, a drastic cutback expected to last at least through this week. Subaru has not named just what parts it needs to continue producing it Legacy and Outback models in full force. Production will temporarily drop from about 586 cars a day to 293, reports Automotive News. The automaker says it expects a parts shipment to arrive next week, although it hasn’t said if it will bring production back up to its regular pace immediately. Subaru, analysts say, could be in a tougher place than many automakers since its smaller size gives it fewer suppliers relative to larger automakers like Honda and Toyota. Subaru also builds the Toyota Camry under contract in Lafayette. Production of that model has not been affected by any parts shortage Parts shortage forces Subaru to trim production at Indiana plant |

It might get worse. Toyota has just announced pretty big cuts:
"....suspend production on Mondays and Fridays between April 15 and April 25. That will continue through June 3, the company said in a statement. "During the same period, production will run at 50% on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday," the statement said. In addition, Canadian production will be suspended for the week beginning May 23, and U.S. production for the week starting May 30. No decisions have been made for production after June 3, according to Toyota Motor Corp....." Toyota making drastic production cuts after Japan quake, tsunami - CNN.com
