I'm a proud owner of a 2005 Outback as of yesterday! Really stoked, I've always loved Subaru's. First thing is first, I need to be able to play my own music -- I've been searching the forums all day to see what solutions are available for AUX Input on the radio.
I have the stock radio with 6-Disc CD Changer and dual climate control. From what I've read there seem to be two options... The first being the JazzyEngineering AUX Kit with a silent CD - Seems like something I can install.
The other is the jl audio cleansweep, but I'm not sure if it works on my model, and I believe it requires an additional amp and re-wiring of my speakers. Would appreciate any insight as I couldn't find too many answers here.
Are there any other good options that I'm missing?
Awesome, thank you both for the reply. @rasterman -- How much time would you say you put into adding the new stereo? Also, what's the approximate cost?
I could probably do one again in 3 hours but plan on all day. Go slow and don't break anything.
I bought the jdm kit from avo, some wire harnesses from svxdc and then of course a stereo deck. I think I already had all the tools needed. I put about $600 into the whole project, and the stereo itself was only about $180.
It's certainly not a cheap solution but I wanted to nuke it from orbit. Had it a few years now and couldn't imagine going back.
Also thinking about updating the deck again since I have the freedom to do that much more inexpensively now.
@rasterman Just to get this right as I've been wrapping my head around it:
The JDM Kit allows you to separate the climate control from the stereo by replacing it, and then you can fit a custom head unit.
The wire harness allows you to convert the subaru stereo harness into a more generic one for regular stereos? I can't seem to find SVXdc's harness for sale, and am a little confused if I need to add pins to it or not. Is there a more updated version of this available?
Thanks a ton, I think this is the route I'd like to go...I plan on having this car a long time
You've got the kit right, that's exactly what it does. Once you have that, you can buy any double-DIN sized stereo you like and enjoy any features it might contain. Climate control is done through a standalone pod packaged in the jdm kit. It is slightly different but works exactly as well.
You will need the wire harnesses from svxdc's site which is ae64.com. You will almost certainly have to wait a few days before he gets back to you. The wire harnesses are a side deal for him and that's just the way it goes.
You will want the 14-pin forward harness and the i88 harness from his catalog. Whoever sells you the stereo may include a 14-pin forward harness. Ignore it. Don't pay extra. Use the one from svxdc as he makes them with 1 wire different to enable the illumination function correctly.
Then you can do the splice as described on the thread in my sig, and the rest is the mechanical fit of the installation.
The worst is cutting the dash frame to create clearance for the JDM emergency blinker light. It will feel like you are wrecking your car, but once it's cleaned up and done you can't tell it isn't stock.
There's a thread here where one guy is getting ready to replace his HVAC controller with a custom homemade one built on an arduino. He's already talking about adding media playback features- the project could open up some really cool new stuff for these cars.
@rasterman -- I think I'm going to go an easier route and replace my stereo with a factory P-204UH which are in the 2007's and get the harness with AUX in put.
I have a speaker underneath my seat that came with the car. Is this considered the subwoofer? Some forums have pointed out that the P-204UH radio won't support my subwoofer.

It isn't directly supported as plug and play, but I think it can still be done. Again, you'd need to talk with svxdc and use at least one of his custom harnesses to retain the feature if it's possible at all.
If you skip the sub, you might have an easier time of it but I don't think it's a lot of extra work if I remember right.
This is an older thread, you may not receive a response, and could be reviving an old thread. Please consider creating a new thread.
