I'm about to tear the front of my car off and black out my headlights and install some LED strips (such as an Audi and now about half the cars on the road).
My question is, can I pirate the wiring to run the power from the DRLs to my LED strips and then when I turn the lights fully on it will extinguish the LED and light the low beam. Any thoughts? I'd rather do it that way then use fog light power for LED. Just an idea.

probably not as DRL run on less than full power, i never tested them but I wont be surprised if they run at around 9-10 volts. But thats not a big problem the biggest one is figuring out how to make your low beam switch turn off drl. From what I understand DRL are just low beams with relay that acts as a resistor of sorts so since it is all on the same wires you'd need some sort of relays to split power at the light.
It can be done but do you really want to end up in the Rice thread over on LGT.com? |

If it's done by a relay, it shouldn't be that hard to take the output of that relay and have it feed a new relay to switch the LEDs. Then add a 2nd new relay to cut them when you turn on low beams. It sounds like 5 minutes of new circuit design, an hour or two of running wires and mounting lights, and half a day of figuring out where to tap into the existing harness. Not bad.

I was thinking that the DRL current was already chopped when low beams came on. For it to run 9-10 volts to the bulb wouldn't it require more than a relay? I would think it would require step down transformers, and it would be easier to just install a resistor so not much current gets through (unless my understanding of electricity is whacked). What a PITA.

Here is an easy way. Disable the drl in your car. Install a drl control module like this: Day Time Running Light Switch Automatic Control ON/OFF DRL Lamp Relay Harness | eBay
Your drl strips will light up when you start your car. When you turn on your headlights, your drl strips will turn off. |
