In the middle of replacing the rear shocks after 91K, they're completely shot.
Lots of fluid missing from the driver side, the passenger side had no oil leaks but has the dampening qualities of foam. I didn't realize my original '06 Subaru shocks were KYBs. Under the layer of grime I can see the branding. |

Are those an upgrade then? Are they gas? I may do shocks / struts next spring, (no pun). Does KYB have several levels of performance?

if yours are bad, any new shock will feel like an upgrade.
i have read that the KYB guys 'claim' their Excel-G (used to be GR2) replacements are 15% stiffer than stock - I dunno. I think they are awesome on my wife's 03 OBW and, though the overall feel of the car is only slightly 'tighter', we did pick up a new rattle. But again, we were replacing worn shocks so......

Your correct on the 96 and up being kyb. I will be throwing a new set on my car next month. I read they should be stiffer than oe but not rough. They should kinda break in after a few miles

my '04 forester xt had kyb's stock too. the kyb replacements i added were firmer.
i now have a '13 OB and the stock units are kyb too. i'm currently bugging kyb to offer a replacement for the '13 OB soon so i can get rid of the crummy stock shocks. the stock units don't hold up to the rought & fast los angeles roads. see my thread to rally the OB community together to bug Tokico, Bilstein & KW to produce replacement shocks for the '13 OB's. duckboy
