I don't know how its done on an AT without taking off the intake. takes a little longer, but it had to come out anyways to do the heads so may as well do it in the car.

anyone know how much the 2.5 weighs????

I have limited space in my shop due to a sharing deal...a hoist and car would not allow my partner to get into the shop if he needs to , and I'm sure with my bad back this job will take longer that the usual DIY mechanic...I'm thinkin' a chain on lift points and a metal pole and 2 buddies as the hoist...I have done this before on small 4 cyl engines...but want to be sure its possible this way...else my pard 'n I could have a bit of a conundrum...thanks for any info...

You should only be using the hoist to get the motor out. Once out, you should put the motor on an engine stand and put the hoist somewhere else. Most of them fold up. Even if you get it out with out a picker, you will have a heck of a time getting it back in the car and getting the trans and engine to line up.

Also, it is possible to remove the motor without removing the intake, its just a bit tougher to get the torque converter bolts off. Since you need to remove it anyways though to do the head work I would take it off before removing the motor. During installation though, I recommend assembling the entire engine outside of the car and dropping it all in.

Lastly, if anymore than a couple of the valves are out of adjustment I would recommend having a shop perform a full valve adjustment while they are resurfacing the head. Take it too a shop that works on Subaru motors and it should not be very expensive. Where do you live?
