Hopping to get some info? I am down without a car now so i need to try to do some shopping and I am unsure of the parts i need? I know most of the cost is the labor, but if i can save any money on parts that would be great . I see this sticky for parts
Best Online sources for Subaru parts? But i have no clue what is needed on a HG replacement and to other types of stuff that is needed on the breakdown.. like since they have the engine out go ahead and replace, this and this etc.. No idea is this brand of gasket is better then this cause of this etc.... |

you don't mention what engine (there are a few available in 1997).
EJ25 probably? get this headgasket for EJ25 from Subaru: 11044AA610 just depends how thorough of a job you want to do. if you're trying to save a buck it sounds like you're not wanting to do a thorough job, so you'll have to decipher what you do and don't want to do. essential: headgasket and intake manifold gasket other stuff: cam seals, valve cover gaskets, spark plug gaskets, reseal oil pump (oring and crank seal), exhaust manifold gasket. timing belt kit off ebay - with or without water pump. as to WHERE to buy it - again - depends if you're really interested in saving a buck. it takes hours to decipher which places have the cheapest parts (some parts are cheaper at one place than another), then decide which to get OEM and which not, then which places have cheapest shipping.....you could end up spending about 4 hours deciphering all that and order 3 parts from rockauto, 3 from Subaru, 4 from thepartsbin.com, one from amazon, and one from ebay. there is no answer to "who is cheapest" - you just have to go figure it out. in the end few people find it worth it to sit 4 hours to decipher the absolute cheapest way to get all those parts....just pick one or two and roll with it. here is what i would do: ask the local subaru dealer to match the online pricing, mine does. if they don't, just order it from one of the online dealers - they all have different prices and different ways to charge shipping so there's no answer to "who is cheaper". i would order from Subaru and check out rockauto.com and thepartsbin.com - again depends what you're getting and shipping (which varies) so there's no way to answer which is better - you just have to go order.

Im not sure on the engine i just know its the 2.5, anywhere to look on it and see?
Yeah i want to save some money since I am paying out of pocket and got to save up for it . I just don't have the money on hand since its after the holidays. But I want to do it right, but if i can save a little money along the way even better ya know. I will check with my local subaru and might go the one or 2 place and roll with it for less frustration. I pretty much want to replace what needs to be done so it will last me a while.. That site that has the kit for $343 with separator plate sounds like a winner to me!
