Thanks for those great links. Here's a couple o' more.
If you live in LA and need that Head Gasket job, this is the place: Link no longer works. He fixed my '99 Outback with the internal leaking HGs, overheating, bubbling, sticky-smelling, the whole sad story. He charged $1500 in Nov. '07 including sending out the heads for resurfacing. He made out a complete parts list and offered me any I wanted. It's still going strong in Jan '09. He made me love the car again, and he's a nice guy. I spent $2500 trying to fix it before Googling and realizing what the real problem was. If I lived closer to that ruddy chunk of Lankershim I'd go to him for everything. There's also a place called Suby Specialists in Monrovia, CA that other Outback owners I have met rave about. Here's a shop in the Seattle area and their head gasket page, just so you know you aren't going crazy. I actually called them from LA when I was at my wits end. They told me their price and what elements were essential (resurfacing) so I could compare and choose a shop in LA. http://www.smart-service.com/mikesco...eadgasket.html My dad says this community reminds him of Volkswagen owners in 1959 who would always toot and flash their headlights at each other. Outback owners are more like, "Dude, how are your head gaskets?" Last edited by AWDFTW; 03-30-2011 at 03:48 PM. Reason: Removed broken link. |

I was hard up for money but still needed to keep this little beauty running so I researched the different radiator additives. I wasn't all that excited about trying one because I believe that they are all only a temporary fix and can cause problems with the rest of your cooling system. I took a big leap of faith and poured a bottle of Steel Seal in the radiator. That was 4 months ago. I have put close to 5000 miles on her and no problems. Also, these guys, gave me great service! UPS crushed the first bottle in shipping. I called and I had a replacement in 2 days. Good Luck!

Some details and photos of the DIY head gasket repair job I did on my 1997 Outback:
Flounderings A few people seem to have found that useful. Anyone trying this is welcome to contact me with questions. |
