Why 6000 mile OCI on the 2015

Oil change interval on the 2014 outback was 7000 miles and at that the oil was barely showing color. Now on the 2015 the oil change interval has been decreased to 6000 miles. This is with high quality synthetic oil that should be good to 12-15k. Any thoughts

Oil change interval was 7500 miles until MY 2015. What was happening is that owners were going this long without ever checking oil and cars were coming in with very low (~ 2 quarts down) oil levels in some cases. This is partially due to the thin and fairly volatile SAE 0w-20 oil. To mitigate this Subaru shortened the change interval by 20%.

A change interval of only 6000 miles for a full synthetic is VERY conservative. I run 15,000 miles between changes with Amsoil and my used oil tests out fine, with very low wear. The TBN's are in the 3-4 range, which shows plenty of reserve detergency.

Customer - Hey! I burned over a quart in 5900 miles!!
Dealer - Well, you're due for a change anyway...
