Just got back from a trip last weekend and was able to get ethanol free fuel. It was all highway driving, but HOLY $H*T!!!! I got nearly 3 mpg average more than on the cut rate stuff! I was able to get over 430 miles on the tank and just barely over 29 mpg. This was on I 81 in Virginia with 3 people in the car and maybe 100-120lbs of stuff in the back. I am also comparing the exact same trip in nearly the same conditions (weight, passengers, temp, etc).

Hi guys! Great info all around and 1st post here!
2005 OBXT, 5 speed. We put gas in this am from a seedy station in BFE, (no other option). ~90 miles later, rough idle, and then CEL and Blinking Cruise. Put pint of Seafoam in and it seemed to smooth out for a bit. However, ~120 miles into the tank, won't idle at all and still won't after 200+miles. We had the code read and came up P0302, (misfire cyl #2) and did reset. CEL came back on short time after and still won't idle, just stalls out. Any one seen this before? planning on taking it in to genuine six star ASAP. |

I've run ethanol in every kind of engine and never had a problem. Maybe I'm lucky but my track record at cards and the lottery suggest other wise!

Good post! We have some of these stations with in a 15-20 minute drive from our house. Will see if we can fill up there the next time and check the performance and mileage difference

I remember reading in this forum something about a strong fuel smell which we had for the first time today. does anyone remember where this discussion was? The smell gradually went away but it took some time before it did!

We get worse gas mileage when the gas has ethanol in it. It is like watering down the gasoline, not only that, it damages rubber components in time, so not only are you paying MORE for one gallon of GASOLINE, you are also ruining your vehicle the longer you use it. Where I live there used to be one station that did not have it. They closed last year.
Now, I would probably need to drive at least 50 miles to find a station without ethanol in their fuel. With the 2005 Outback, it shows your average gas mileage. Without ethanol, we averaged 27-29 miles per gallon around town and on the interstate. With ethanol, the exact same driving gets us 24-26 miles per gallon. So much for something that is 'supposed' to be a great idea. |

When we were living in OK, numerous stations advertised "100%" gas. I tried it as an experiment for two weeks, then went back to E10 as a control. Although I had my best average mileage on a tank of "100%", the difference between best and worst tank was less than 1 MPG.
Remember too, that "100% gas" isn't 100% gas either. It uses MTBE as an octane booster. Since MTBE is banned in many states, you won't see a 100% gas product in those states. Although ethanol has a host o political arguments made about it, it is, as part of a blend, a very effective octane booster. Curiously, many properly tuned turbo and supercharged engines are able to produce higher HP and torque outputs using E85, due to that fuel's 105 octane. Higher octane ratings mean less premature detonation and that means these engines can run more boost. Albeit, these numbers come at the expense of fuel efficiency. Sent from my iPhone using AG Free |

I noticed that the site said none of the stations in Dickinson, ND ran pure gas. I know that most (if not all) have pure gas in 91 and 87 and the 89 is the cheapest but has the 10% corn.
