Default 2004 subaru legacy transmission filter and oil change

I got the filter and transmission oil to change the oil and filter in my 2004 legacy.Upon draining the oil,i looked for the filter. There was no filter, only a plug where the filter should have been.Having no wrench to get it off,i just want to know if the factory commonly does not place the filters on at assembly and what should i do? Thanks,The MexiCan

If its an H6, the spin on filter is under the left fender behind the fog light. If its a 2.5, its in the pan. Neither get replaced unless there is interior transmission damage. The system gets flushed every 30k miles.

If the filter is replaced, use only a Subaru filter.

2004 models with the 2.5 and drive-by-wire have the filter behind the fog light as well.

Did they change something midway through on the phase 2 4EAT? My friends 2000 (Legacy) AT definitely has an external spin on trans filter.

Yup. The spin on filter was dropped.

Just to be clear, that was in MY2008.

The external spin-on filter appeared with the introduction of the Phase II 4EAT transmission in 1999 (a similar filter had been used on much earlier Subaru transmissions, the Justy CVT I believe, but was not on the Phase I 4-speed). As noted, some 4-speeds, around 2004, had the filter re-located to the left front fender; otherwise they were on the side of the transmission until 2008.

Yes, others with 08s have reported the same. Probably early MY2008 production with carry-over stock of the 4AT.
