It is narrowed down between the Triple Treds and the Nokian WR. I want a four season tire that does good in the snow. From all of the reviews it seems like these are leading the pack. The cost is the only drawback of purchasing these tires. Are there any cheaper alternatives that I should check out before making a final decision?

Peel,
I'm wracking my brain with choosing tires too. From what I've read, it seems as though the TripleTred is a great dry tire that's also good in the snow, and the WR is a great snow tire that's also good when it's dry. I was quoted $220/tire for the WR and $154 for the TripleTred at Discount Tire here in Denver. I'm sure I can find the WR cheaper, but it's not really on my short list. My choices are (in today's order): Yokohama YK-520 (only available at Discount), TripleTred, and Michelin HydroEdge. Prices between the three are close enough that it's not a factor. Good luck choosing!

@angrypeppers, that is an insanely high price for WRs, even in 17".
I got 4 16s installed for 600 out the door. @Peel, I'd go with the WR, but that's mainly because I'm biased. I think the TT might have a longer treadlife though...something to consider.

Also had the same predicament (choice between the TT's or the WR's). Went with the TT's, as I was able to have a friend who worked part time at Sam's Club order it for me and had them mounted and balanced for free. I have to say that I am quite pleased with them. Good luck with your choice. Either one would definitely be a big step up from the Potenzas.

The WR will give you better performance and slightly better ice and snow traction. The TT will give you close to double the mileage.
TT 720 treadwear rating WR 400 $220.00 per tire is nuts, must be for 17" run flats. Try Nokian Tires |

Peel,
I have Triple Treads on my Chevy Suburban and my Toyota Highlander and they are fine. For the price difference I would get the TT's. If the WR were cheaper I would go with those. Both are top end and will wear out in about 40,000 +- miles depending how you drive. There isn't $66 x 4 = $264 worth of difference. Take this money and buy yourself another toy. |

Yeah, I kinda chuckled when the guy told me $220. They are 17's, but that's still a lot of coin!

I've stopped chuckling about the WR price...these are prices for Denver area stores, YMMV.
I was quoted the following for the WR's just this morning; Big O: $219.99 each, $919 installed Meadow Creek Tires: $219.99 each, $912 installed The TT's are on the Sam's Club website for $131.88 each. Road hazard, rotation, etc. adds $9 per tire. Hydroedge's are listed at $153.02 each. Both are special order. The tire guy told me that special order tires usually arrive in 2-7 days. Hope that helps you, Peel!

www.tiresbyweb.com has the WR in a 225/55R17 for $183 each w/ free shipping.
I also checked locally... the price per tire was $195.84 + $12.50 balance (they mount for free, wtf?!) + 5% sales tax
