What is the largest tire i can fit on my 00 outback without rubbing, or with very little. Also what would you recommend for an A/T or beefier tire? Gas Mpg effects?
Any input would be great! Thanks |

Hi. I"m going to say roughly p225/60r16 based on the fact that when I run michelin x-ice in that size on my soob, they rub up front in tight turns, and there is hardly any additional clearance between the top of the tire and strut lower spring seat.
These are on aftermarket +55mm I think steel wheels though, where I think the stock is +48mm that year for the outback I forget which way that goes could check cars101.com wheels page for details. You can use that tire size calcultaor thing at miata.net to see roughly what tire sizes (at least nominally) have that diameter. ![]()

I would imagine a 225/65R16 (27.5") would fit with minimal rubbing. I run a 215/65R16 (27.0") General Grabber AT2 which has some pretty beef tread, and have had no rubbing issues at all. The 225, is about 1/4" larger in radius, so I think it would clear fine. We actually had someone here throw some 27" Super Swampers on a 2000 Outback, but they rubbed pretty bad.
New Tires! (SSR's)

I would say that I lost about 1.5-2 MPG across the board when I switched from the stock tires to the Grabbers. I would imagine the Geolandars are going to be a little better than that.

The Yokohama Geolanders 215/60R16 were the standard (Subaru fit) tyre for the Aust Outbacks of that series.
I have only ever had those tyres on my car and I get about 9lts/100km (26.1 US MPG) on them. I am not sure if they are the best tyres for the car, but they are a reasonable road and have strong enough side walls for some reasonable off roading. I would personally like a taller tyre next time and was thinking of some Toyo’s 215/65/16 highway/terrain tyres.
