Default buying 2 tires

I have a 2008 Subaru outback wagon. After approximately 15,000, one of the tires got a cut, and I ended up buying 2 Potenza tires to match the ones that came on the car. Now my other 2 tires need replacing. I've been told by one tire shop that I have to buy Potenza, although several people have told me that's not a great tire. Is there a danger in buying 2 tires that are another brand?

I personally wouldn't do it. I'd just buy four new matching tires. I realize that may not be in the budget, but it's a lot less expensive than drive train repairs and replacements.

It is best for an AWD car to have all tires matching. Sorry.

It is critical that the tire circumference match to within 1/4 inch; the real rolling circumference for tires from 2 manufacturers might be different even if the static circumference was the same.

Also, there may be handling issues with mismatched tire types, probably a small chance, but it is there.

If your tires have mismatched wear now, and you do not yet have torque bind, don't push your luck further. Either get 4 tires, or, if the 2 good tires are really good, get 2 identical tires from tirerack and have tirerack shave them to match before shipping them.

So at 15,000 you added 2 new tires, and now the 2 old tires are worn out- how many miles are on the car now?

barbarakessel,

@ the end of the day it's much . . . much. . . cheaper to buy 4 new tires than replacing differentials.

Nevertheless, I feel your pain because my wife's '08 2.5i OBWL @ 20K had a screw in the sidewall & plenty of tread left on the other 3!

Regards,
