Default Tires

I have a 2005 obxt w/ stock tires and rims. I am looking to put a wider tire on and lower it an inch or so for handling. I know people give others crap for wanting to lower their outbacks but I keep getting in trouble going off road a lot so I figure this will be a way to to keep me off mtn trails. What is the widest tire I can put on the stock 17's? Also, any suggestions for lowering it an inch or so? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I have read where one guy ran 245/50/17's w/o a problem. I might try to find an old 245 and mount it on to check out the clearance. I wish I had more time to browse the posts to find out more but right now work is kicking my a$$, all I get done is sleeping, working and the 20min commute to work in my obxt, which is the highlight of my day. I do get to drive 2 hrs on friday and sunday night to my parents place on weekends where I cross 2 mountain ranges with everything from hairpins to double apexes to 90mph sweepers so I'm looking to "spruce up" my ride a little. My red corvette just turned 5yrs old and started kindegarten so it's gonna be a while for that one...
