Default winter tire solution for 2006 2.5l

I just bought this car with 4 season tires on 17 inch wheels. Want to get winter tires and rims . I was advised to get 16 in steel rims and Pirelli Carving ties . Does that sound like good solution

While you will get a better response in the tire section......

I will say 16" wheels is the way to go. Try to find a set of used Subaru aluminum wheels. You can pick up 16" WRX wheels for $200 for the set.
And for tires, I recomend Hankook iPike409s, or General Artics.

Any used Subaru wheels with a 5x100 bolt pattern will fit just fine. Bang for the buck I think General Altimax Arctic are hard to beat.

Also, welcome to the site. Would you like me to leave this thread here or move it to the Tires subforum?

I've said it many times before and I'll say it again...

GO WITH NOKIAN TIRES!

Do a search for "nokian" on this site and you'll find hundreds of posts about how great that brand is, there is no other company that makes a better snow tire. They can be a little pricey but you'll see that they're worth every penny in the end.

True, I think Nokian is the best of the best with their winter line. However they are out of my budget range, so I go with "as good as I can afford" most of the time. The joy of being a student again...

If you want Nokians on a budget, look for their Nordman tire. It is the same tread design as the older Hakkapelita 4, but it is much cheaper than the newer Hakapelita 5 designs.
