Angry How screwed am I?

Can this be patched as it's just on the surface or I do I now need 4 new tires? I have 10,750 miles on the OEM Conti-crappers.

It's not leaking but I know nothing about tire construction. Is it just rubber there that covers the part that holds the air in- or does the rubber that low on the side wall offer structural support?

Dang it.... I already know where this is headed... :

I'd say it is shot.

Options include ordering a new tire from Tire Rack/Discount Tire Direct and having it shaved to match the tread amount on the remaining 3, or upgrade to 4 better tires if yours are 50% or more worn.

Looks like a good excuse to do an all-around upgrade -- that's the sort of damage that can't safely be fixed.

Since you're in Atlanta, think about a set of really good all-seasons. I like Goodyear TripleTreds, but others find them noisy. There are lots of opinions here and at TireRack. HPH

Thanks. I'm hoping to move to Seattle soon and I would also like something a bit more heavy duty for off-roading.

I am currently thinking about these:

GEOLANDAR A/T-S Off-Road Performance Tires | Yokohama Tire Corp.

They come in stock 225/60 R17, or one size up to 225/65s - would love to go bigger but am worried about clearing the spring perches.

Any thoughts?

You should not and can not patch a sidewall on a tire. NOT safe! And they will not do a sidewall patch in most states. Even the manufacture does not recommend. Most tire sidewalls are only two ply.

Too bad about the tire but its not repairable. Crappy Conti or not, sidewall damage like that can happen with most tires against a sharp curb or rock. Consider yourself lucky to have spared the nice powder coated rim from damage.
