So who is going to be the first to import a dual range manual transmission from a ROW '04-'09 Outback and fit it to a USDM Outback? Hmmm....
P.S. -- I'm kinda surprised that Superu hasn't done this yet..

I'm probably being a little overly optimistic (unlike me), but I would think that it would be a pretty strait forward bolt in (for manual transmission cars at least), with all the necessary parts being available, though you'd likely have to order them from a European dealer and have them shipped in (things like shifter, shift linkage, center console, etc..). Of course, this also assumes gearing is the same, and it wouldn't require a new or re-geared rear differential as well..

This is EXACTLY what I have planned for my BG after I graduate.
The shipping is going to be killer AFTER the long and difficult hunt for a good condition used drivetrain. And the FD is different (I'm pretty sure the dual range cars are 4.01) so you'd have to buy the whole set. It's an EJ trans, so it will bolt up to a USDM (or in my case JDM) EJ25, but the linkage is a whole different story that I have yet to finish.

It is a bolt in, but modifications have to be done for the shifters. It has been looked into. Importing one from Austrailia, the cost of shipping usually stops everyone's plans.
And in actuality an automatic with the torque converter (multiplier) does the same thingh as a dual range tranny. |

I've been looking into this for 3-4 years. Yes COSTLY!!
There are a few ways to go about it to get a good combination of low gears and final drive, but at any rate they have a low gear in a FT AWD and we do not. A down side of the DR FT AWD OB 5MT is they have a very weak low gear reduction, 1.196:1 BUT you can mod an EA82 low gear (1.596:1) into them with some effort. It's a bit tricky with the details of numbers across trim lines but let me see if I can explain off the top of my head, with respect to 5MTs.. gen 1 legacies (there I think they were 89-93?) had 3.70 FD with a 1.196:1 low gear gen 2 legacies (there I think they were 94-98?) had 3.90 FD with a 1.196:1 low gear gen 1 OBs had 3.90/3.70 I forget with a 1.196:1 low geargen 2 OBs had 3.90 FD with a 1.196:1 low gear gen 1 FOR (97-02) had 4.11 FD with 1.447:1 low gear and were behind a NA EJ20 gen 2 FOR (03-08?) had 4.11 FD with 1.196:1 low gear I've been trying to configure a 4.11 FD with a 1.596:1 low, but it would require 3 transmissions and a fair amount of modification... AND you have to find a willing bloke down under to do the work of finding, pulling, verifying and shipping the thing here. A tricky and difficult proposition. BUT it would be SOOO SWEET!! [QUOTE='05 Outback2.5i;276028]So who is going to be the first to import a dual range manual transmission from a ROW '04-'09 Outback and fit it to a USDM Outback? Hmmm.... It's funny because I am "superu" on a couple other forums, but NOT the Superu with the 3rd gen OB lifted on springs and spacers. A very nice rig I must say!! I'm this superu (on other forums, obviously a vowel change for this forum (here's a before and after the new paint scheme, and a gen 2 OB front spring swap) ![]() |

I looked into this for a while and came to the conclusion it wasn't going to be cost effective for what you would get.
I decided to leave my Subaru stock and not push it too hard off-pavement ![]() Then for a little more money than importing a tranny and stuff, I pick up a compact rig that gets similar mileage, true 4WD and low range for off-pavement exploring. The other "S" car, a Suzuki Sidekick.
