The 395 is one of my favorite places in the world, and I've seen a lot of both. The closest place I'd compare it to is the south island of NZ. Been up and down 395 dozens of times, and one fun memory is driving the dirt road down from Crowley lake, following the hydroelectric maintenance road. The 395 gives you so much interesting geological stuff to look at, drive through. Then there's back country trips over to Saline Valley, Death Valley, Hunter Mtn. Road etc. What a place!

Just saw this thread today! This road is why I keep on getting Outbacks (on my 4th), and how I got my Handle.

My second favorite highway in California runs right into it: Hwy 120 Tioga Pass. Much more beautiful, but not as diverse.

I have lived 5 miles off the 395 for most of my life. There is such wonderful diversity in all the areas around the 395. where else can you go from -282 feet to 14505 feet in such a short distance? I have been to so many spots between here (a couple hours south of Mt. Whitney) and nevada. Whitney, White Mountain, Saline Valley (I did that one in my impreza, which had me wincing every couple minutes as I thought I was going to rip my oil pan open on a rock. ), Cotton wood lakes, Yosemite, Mammoth, Death Valley, etc... too many to remember and there are so many more to see.

I was worn out on bodie at a young age though. my dad stopped there every time we drove to grandma's house for like 5 years straight... my wife wants to see it though, so maybe I should take the new OB for a day trip.... or a 2-day trip

fyi Tioga pass opened on June 18.

The Merced River peaked above flood stage @ Pohono Bridge on June 16, 22, 23...and is now ebbing. The top of Vernal Falls was amazing when we were there 3 weeks ago. Wapama Falls into Hetch Hetchy was also amazing & fun, though apparently it became deadly dangerous last week.

There is still plenty of snow in the high country right now. 2011 is a great year for road-trip procrastinators to still enjoy the sierra melt.

See you there.
