Use your Subie's offroad ability by touring the scenic dirt road byways along US 395 in eastern California.
If any SUV drivers are planning a trip along US 395 in California, I highly recommend "Motor Touring in the Eastern Sierra." I picked up the Inyo and Mono County editions of the free guide, published by the BLM, CalTrans, Forest Service, and others. You can get a PDF copy here: Motor Touring in the Eastern Sierra or you can pick up a free copy at the Interagency Visitor Center just south of Lone Pine. Many businesses along US 395 also have free copies.

Bodie is one of my favorite places!
The printed guide contains trips in three separate volumes.

Thanks for posting this. I love this area. Here are a few suby snaps from my last e. sierra trip in September.
Forest road ![]() Sweet campsite Suby hiding behind tree. Creek hiding behind bushes behind suby. ![]() ![]() Happy horses ![]() Oncoming traffic ![]() If you venture north of Bishop and want to explore on foot, Exploring Eastern Sierra Canyons is a real gem of a guide. Can't wait for Tioga, Sonora, and Ebbetts to open again. Thanks so much for the reminder. ![]() -Jeff |

It's hard to take bad pictures in that area.
![]() That campsite is in a small public US-govt managed campground, on a creek, at the end of a long dirt road. That is much more information than you need to find it on the map. Afaik no other campground in the eastern sierras matches that description. And finding it is part of the fun, right? ![]() The grader was the only other vehicle I saw on the way in or out. Really you could take any car on that road...especially since they just graded it last fall...but the outback does it faster than most. I'll look for a silver 2009 there this summer. ![]() ![]() -Jeff |

FYI Sonora & Ebbetts opened on May 28, Tioga on June 5.
Thanks Caltrans!!! This is the absolute best time of year to cross the Sierras, imho. All four seasons in a 2 hour drive. Canyons of snow at the top. Love it. See ya there. ![]() -Jeff |
