Ever own a porsche 924? - Click HERE for Original Thread
mtmactom
This may be a stretch, but I am considering undertaking a big project. Someone in my town is selling a 1977 Porsche 924 for $500. It runs, but the body is not in the best shape, it is 2 tone, primer gray and rust. Has anyone ever owned one of these? If so what things should i look out for? My biggest concern would be frame rot, floor pans falling out etc. Body panels are easy enough to replace. So has anyone ever owned one of these? I really want to get myself a fun project that i can auto-x and just have fun with the RWD. Should i continue looking into this, or run screaming.
Thoughts?

I'd check online for the availability of parts....I almost bought a 914 a few years back, then tried to find random parts, and found a place out of CA that had parts....I was a poor college student living in MA at the time....it was the deal breaker....

Yea, it is looking less and less possible as i am a poor husband and father of 3. I have investigated a few 914s in the past too. It seems i can only even consider the VW engine porsches as my 911 is always out of reach.

Do you have a trailer to haul it to AutoX's?

If so, then buy it.

But I would not want to license/register it. Keep it for on track only to save you a couple bucks if it breaks down. Just a thought.

Do your family a favor, spend the time, effort, and money on them, not on a money pit project.

A heap of rust is probably worth as much at the scrap yard but think what you could do if you dropped that engine into a $500 VW bug! :roadtrip:
mtmactom
porsche 924 has a 4 cylinder in line water-cooled engine. old vw bugs 4 cylinder horizontally opposed air cooled engine??????
Subhuman
I knew a guy who did a conversion with a Porsche engine into a Bug. Not sure about the specific and I'm not a mech but I thought Porsche engines were horizontally opposed?
ETC
not the 924, 928 they were front engine rwd i-4, sort of anemic power if i recall.

sometime in the 80's they had a turbo model that was quick.

better off bolting a turbo suby motor to a built 091 vw bus trans and slapping that into a bug but ....... still handles like crap and you have to plumb a radiator in it.

i'd walk on a porsche unless it was a 911 and it was really cheap. too expensive to fix, maintain, insure etc

better off with a more common japanese car that is popular in the "ricer" crowd, parts are plentiful and cheaper and there's all kinds of bolt ons for performance.

early 70's datsun 510 i had was fun, semi trailing inde rear end, motor was easy to build, handled great with some aftermarket struts, braces, sways.

Doh! My bad, sorry mtmactom, I failed :twak:

+1 on what ETC said
ETC
he could have dropped a 914 motor in a bug. the motors in the back so it's not unrealistic to think he he could have found a totaled donor porsche.

an early seventies 914 4 cyl which was essentially a volkwagon had a much more powerful engine and a stronger transaxle. still at only about 80 hp vs's the bugs approx 50, a suby motor would be the equivalent of two 914 motors.

not sure if you could stuff an old 911 flat 6 in a bug, never tried, it was too easy to build a bug motor and they were a dime a dozen back when i had one. 1600 dual port was a pretty good motor for an air cooled.

another porsche to keep an eye for besides the 911, 912 is a early 70's 914 with the six in it. they only made a few so if you find one in an old ladies garage ........

to clarify my earlier post, the 928 did not have a 4 in it, it had a 8 in front and a rear transaxle [kinda like a new vette]. after rereading what i said, it sounded like they were similar, which they weren't.

Don't most autocross events require the car to be tagged and insured (liability) though??
