we've been fighting this stuff for years, few people other than those who ride give a crap so it doesn't get much press.

there are a bunch of activist groups like the sierra club that use tear jerking mailers to get huge amounts of money to lobby for this stuff. they usually find some animal or plant they can get put on an endangered species list and that's all it takes.

they closed a 1/3 of imperial sand dunes by getting the piersons milkvetch listed endangered [ a weed]. they say it's the only place it thrives, the counter argument is that people have been duning there for years and yet, it still thrives. some researches say it's due to the traffic spreading the seeds around and turning up the sand.

on the other side, there are a lot of filthy useless scumbags that go out to these rec areas and leave piles of trash and destroy stuff just for the "fun" of it. we do our best to clean up after them but, if they leave after you, it's not possible. used to be a fun place to go but over the last 6-7 years, more and more people go out and the percentage of scumbags seemed to grow exponentially. we all hope that the downturned economy will keep these people home for a few years and they'll forget about going anymore.

just know, for every picture you see of trash or damage, there's a dozen you don't see of clean up days that are organized by responsible offroaders. we spend our time when we should be riding out cleaning up the scumbags trash.

if it weren't for groups like the ASA and others, these places would have been closed years ago with money from soccer moms that want to stop the "horrible offroading scourge"

I have been riding dirt bikes, and specifically dual sports since I was a kid. I have always had somewhere to ride, since all my bike are street legal. But I have seen over the past 15 years the places for off-roaders to ride, dwindle to almost nothing in my home state of FL, and in MT. In MT it was the need for quiet space for the grizzly bears, in FL who the hell knows what their motivation was.

These groups don't seem to understand that people who off-road are not happy being limited to a few far slung off-road parks, where they have to fight it out with 5000 other people. In FL and MT both there are thousands of miles of forest roads, and logging roads that would be perfect for these uses, yet they are all being closed to off-roaders.

I live ID now, and this place is a mecca for the off-roader. I can leave out of downtown Boise and drive for hundreds of miles in any direction and rarely have to hit a paved road. That is the thing I love about dual sports.

Most people don't understand that part of being free is allowing others to do things you may not like or agree with but doesn't hurt anyone. I love animals we should protect and care for them to the best of our ablities, but they are not more important than people or freedom. Some of these eco nuts want everything their way and will say or do anything to that end.

Agreed. This is why I have a hard time signing petitions to keep trails open. Last weekend I went for a trail drive (4x4 truck) in Big Bear... relatively pristine, but you could easily see where scumbags go off-trail and tear the hell out of the landscape with obvious tire-digging antics. The forest service has the trails all marked out as easy, intermediate and difficult... why in the hell do people insist on going off-trail and thrashing the vegetation?

I like going on trail drives in the Mojave and the entire landscape is littered with garbage that people dump, shoot up and destroy, and then leave there. I like my trail drives but it wouldn't exactly break my heart if the roads were closed to motor traffic.

I enjoy the firearms hobby... you learn hard lessons about the rights you lose when some dumbasses act irresponsibly and spoil it for everyone else.

I don't have a problem with some areas being closed off, but unfortunately the "Greenies" (Sierra Club) do not even try for middle ground. The Greenies do not believe state property should be enjoyed by anyone. I would suggest everyone that enjoys the outdoors to get involved. Join your local club (mtn bikes, dirt bikes, quads, horses, etc.) and perhaps join the Blue Ribbon Coalition. Here's their website: http://www.sharetrails.org/

The Sierra Club and the likes a very organized and funded compared to any other off-road enthusiast. It's also important to learn proper etiquette for off-roading. Everytime I see a picture of someone's vehicle splashing through the mud online, the Greenies are winning. They use that for evidence of destroying mother nature and scaring the wildlife. Far from the truth, but they use it against us.

Get involved!

Petition signed. It's been a while since I went off-roading in my own truck, but I've loved it every single time regardless of the vehicle.

In September 2008, I was off-roading on the island of Kauai (Hawaii) with my wife. Having the ability to go off-road allowed for some of the best parts of our honeymoon. We went on a 5-10 mile muddy & rocky service road to get to the remote hiking trail we wanted to take in Kokee State Park in our rental Jeep Wrangler. We also went off-road in Kauai to get to the beautiful remote Polihale State Park beach on the far west side of Kauai where I saw the best sunset I've seen so far in my life. At Polihale I drove our rental Jeep Wrangler right on to the beach following the signs between the sand dunes.

It would be incredibly unfair to punish those of us who responsibly enjoy nature while off-roading.

for anyone who is hesitant to sign one of these petitions, be aware that they are not put together by dirtbags that ruin it for the rest of us. these petitions are one of the ways the lawyers these groups hire can show judges how many people there are on "our" side. like i said, much of the financial and petition support groups like the sierra club have are well meaning but ill informed housewives and couch potatoes who never go riding, hiking, biking, wheeling etc. they just see the pictures of some animal that got run over [personally i think the eco nazis just find roadkill and put it on a trail] or the trash i mentioned and send in their check.

i don't ride or camp with people who act irresponsibly, if they do, they aren't in my camp for long or they "learn" the right way to act. every responsible duner or trailrider i talk to is 100% for huge fines for trash and intentional destruction of public property. just like there's never a cop around when you need one, there's rarely a ranger there either.

seems the only reason some of these places are still open are the exorbitant usage fees we pay, nothing appeals to the state like profit.
