Does food dye ruin car paint? - Click HERE for Original Thread

Ok... so here's the story on why I'm asking this. I know it's a bit childish, but I need to get my friend back for a prank he pulled on me 1.5 years ago... lol.

For my birthday, 1.5 years ago in November, a close friend of mine was the master-mind, with my other 3 friends as his henchmen, for Saran Wrapping my car (the S2000) in a parking lot while I was at work. They used industrial grade saran wrap with I don't know how many layers. Luckily for me, since I do a lot of field surveying (HVAC engineer), I had a box cutter/multi-tool in my work bag which I used to cut my car out. Even then, it still took a while cause they put on so many layers.

So to get him back, I was going to wait for a really cold day so that I can soak pink cotton balls in water and place them all over his White E46 M3 and also freeze newspapers to his windows :D , but unfortunately, it never really got cold that winter :( . So low and behold (after a lot of waiting), we're finally getting a cold front this week, starting tonight, of weather in the teens during the day and single digits at night, perfect for my plan :2: . Now the thing is that, no stores really sell pink cotton balls anymore, so I was going to use a little bit of red food coloring to turn the water pink so that it stands out on his white car.

My only concern is if the food coloring will ruin his paint or not?!?!? If it does, then I won't do the food coloring, I'll just put the white cotton balls on.

What do you guys think?

Sorry guys.... I just realized that I should have put this in The Village forums.

My apologies.

It will probably stain the clearcoat but not the paint. After the thaw and the cotton balls fall off, there will be stains, most likely. It will come out but may take some elbow grease or a skilled buff. I can't say for sure but, if your friend has a nice coat of wax on it may reduce the chance of staining the clear. I personally wouldn't recomend it. In my car pranking days, my favorite was a bag of flour. Cheep, harmless, but a MESS to try to clean up. Hit it with the hose and it just goops up even worse..... but I din't tell you that. Good luck, revenge is best served COLD!

Awesome... thank you for the reply.

I won't be using the red dye then. I'm still going to try out my local Target store to see if they carry pink cotton balls before resorting to the white ones. :D

perhaps stick the colored ones to his windows (front and back so they would drain off the paint if they thawed)- i would feel awfully ****ty if i stained a friends car

you could also go to town with painters tape

Or that stuff they use to sell ghetto cars - those neon markers on windows

You think the colored ones will run color too?... hmmmm. I better not use color at all then. I would feel bad too... I don't want to ruin anything. I'll just use the white ones. It'll still look funny even though his car is white. Plus I was planning on putting it on his windows, grill, and wheels... lol.

Actually... I have a feeling that he's going to get me back with shoe polish on the windows cause he almost did that too as a second prank, even though I didn't get him back for the first prank.

Maybe not cotton balls, put art supply places like "Michaels" sells colored balls, like "pom poms" for lack of the proper term...

If it's very cold (like 0˚F) and there's a water hose that will reach, you could just use a nice mist of water to give him a new "clearcoat". If the air & car are cold enough you can build up a pretty good layer of ice.

I thought of something like that but not exact cause he parks in a somewhat industrial area, so no hoses that would reach. But what I was also thinking was to use a spray bottle of water and mist all around the seals of the door so that they are stuck. That would be pretty messed up too... lol.

If you've got the dough, the friends, or the time.

An idea I thought up would be wrapping in tin foil. OR even better, taping the car with foil tape. Foil tape leaves virtually no residue and is also pretty strong. Takes a lot long time but meh.

Or a combo of the two.

I'd like to see a tin foil car drive around. Leave everything so he can still fully drive it.

lets get an update!
