Always have wanted one, never have had the money, so I've entered in a few of those raffles. Just haven't won one yet!:p
I'd say the biggest thing is to spend time getting familiar with it, and learn to shoot better before spending money trying to improve the rifle. Most of what I have done, driving on a track, riding my motorcycle, shooting, my equipment is not the limiting factor, my skill is.
Take time to learn properly, especially if it is your first gun. If not, then you probably already know this. In that case, have a blast! |

Well, I'd say to just pick up a cheap .22LR, bolt or semi-auto.
I've got a simple bolt .22LR, and can pick up 550 rounds for $13 at WallyWorld. :p
My friend got the Nagant, which comes with the expensive ammo. One thing you can do is to pick up large quantities of ammo at gun shows. |

The 22's are a whole nother topic :)
i have a ruger 10/22 but i would much rather be shooting the AR with 22 rounds till the price drops down. the conversion is not perm it can be reversed in a matter of minutes probly 3 or so. |

Congrats!! Nice score! Remember safety 1st.
I have a red dot and love it - mine is a russian milsurp that I got by dumb luck - look for the dot to be 1 MOA (minute of angle), a lot of the ones out there have a red dot, but it's like 2-3 MOA, so it will cover more of the target and make it harder to be accurate... |

| where did you pick yours up? i want one that is good but not too pricy like 100$ or soo. |

look around, you can still find cheap ... uh... cheaper ammo out there.
my father in law and a friend just got a bunch of russian steel case .223 fmj [steel shell, not the bullet] for a good price. not reloadable but unless you do that, not an issue.
says it shoots fine |

Bought one in 1972 it's on its 4th barrel now still shoots better then I can! One of the finest firearms ever produced. Ammo used to be cheap, the former eastern block still sells 5.56MM fairly cheap. You can also reload. .223's are a little delicate to reload but with some practice you can get good. It's not that reloading is a lot cheaper, it's that if you keep up you always have ammo on hand to plink with.
You'll get many hours of problem free shooting out of firearm! |

There are lots of places to buy cheap ammo, if you don't mind that it's berdan primed (non-reloadable). Look at Sportsmans Guide, Cheaper than Dirt, SARCO in NJ, and any of the gun shows. |

I'm thinking of the new initiatives the congress-critters are coming up with, and the fact the military is destroying its brass prior to scrapping it.

If you do go with the Colt .22 conversion unit, plan to do some extensive cleaning, especially to the gas port and the gas system. The bullet lube on the .22 rounds will plug it up, and eventually will start causing failures to feed/extract with the .223 ammo.
Don't do a lot of switching back and forth without intermediate cleaning, as you'll burn the lube into the tube, and make it much more difficult to remove.
Learn how to do a detailed break down on the rifle, and get some of the long pipe cleaners for cleaning the gas tube. Most cleaning solvents will dissolve the bullet lube (basically wax).
But they really are a lot of fun. More so than even the .223 itself. And excellent training material.
Do it if you can. |

The ammunition isnt THAT expensive if you buy the cheap stuff. Practice with the cheap stuff and keep the good stuff in a seperate clip.
Oh yeah, buy extra clips for the damned thing. That way your buddy can reload it while you're still firing. :11: |

Dave, That brass situation only lasted 2 days. Two dems senators from Montana wrote to DOE who re-re-classified brass as safe to sell. I'm sure the scum in congress will try to tax ammo into extintion. Another reason to reload. |

So I don't know a lot about Subarus (which is why I am here), but guns, especially the ar15, is another story.
First, does the carbine hav back up iron sights (BUIS)? If not, that would be the first purchase I would make along with a good (simple) sling. Then I would find an Appleseed shoot http://www.appleseedinfo.org/smf/ close to you and learn how to shoot it as well as possible with the irons.
After you can hit a man sized target out to 400 yards with your iron sights (easily done with a good AR and a sling) then and only then would I think about a red dot. Red Dots are amazing in their speed and ease of use, but unless you know how the gun operates with irons, you will limit yourself with just a scope.
If you need any additional info, visit www.ar15.com There is a wealth of information there about this rifle and anything you could possibly want for it.
Congrats on a great prize!

The model of my AR
Read the discription of the gun and let me know what you think and what a tensioner is on the lower reciver these guys im sure made me an awsome gun.

Your receiver is made by either Sun Devil or C3 (or one of the few makers who use the tensioner screw idea).
Basically, when you put together a lower receiver and an upper receiver, there is always a little "slop" or play...wiggle room, whatever you want to call it.
Some in the shooting world believe that this slop effects the performance of an AR15, some don't (I fall into the latter category).
Having it won't hurt your gun, but it won't make you Sgt. York either-it's a gimmick to sell more receivers.
Again, since I see you have iron sight (the carry handle has sights on it) I would suggest you spend some time getting to know your weapon and learning to put rounds on target at various distances.
To "sight in" follow this link...
http://ar15zeroing.com/
that is some basic info that will get you started.

To date my Scooby has had over 1,000 rounds of .223 fired from the tailgate. (At places LEGAL to shoot that is, even though my office is in gang-land.)
My setup is a Stag Arms complete rifle that has been modified to California-legal configuration. It came with ARMS #40 backup iron sights and I put an ACOG TA01 (4x optical) sight on it. She hits bowling pins at 200 yards!!
Enjoy your new AR. I have introduced more new people to shooting sports on that thing. Accurate, low recoil, and easily reloaded. A sheer pleasure to own and shoot.
Don't get too hung up on accessorizing. It is an easy trap to fall into and more accessories don't improve your skill. If you really want something to keep you occupied, get a regular sheet of paper and draw two-inch circles on it with a Sharpie. Place it at 100 yards, and try to put ONE bullet into each circle.
I have done this drill for years. It's a great way to sharpen your abilities with a rifle. |

i have a few ar-15's they are great firearms :D
if you shop around you can find pretty decent deals on ammo. watch your walmart they get shipments of different ammo daily and you can usually find it for 40.00 per 100 or 76.00 per 200. i am going to recomend a ar15 forum its ar15armory.com their are tons of very friendly and knowledgable people over there. i havent had much luck with the grumpy people at the other forum mentioned. here are a few pics. i still dont have a picture of my newest one. i will try to snap a pic and share it with you guys

| Nice gun pr0n. No AR-15 here but do have a Beretta CX4 Storm in 9mm. Unforunately in the PR of NY over 10 round mags made after September 1994 are a no-no :( What's that knife in the top left, is that like a sog sealpup or something? |

| Anyone know anything about 22 uppers for ar-15? recently came into some money looking at buying one. full kit with iron sights for 600 or soo. |

| I think I've seen those conversions at places such as cheaperthandirt and midwayusa etc. They're popular on some caliber pistols too for less expensive higher volume practice. |
