Volkswagen Service Intervals - Click HERE for Original Thread

I have determined that Volkswagen has some crazy service intervals. My friend has a 09 Jetta Wagon and they said you don't change the oil until 10k miles. Seems a bit excess. Then after that it is every 10k miles. I was always told that about every 5k miles you change the oil, period.

2.5 5 cylinder or 2.0 FSI Turbo? Might have come from the factory with synthetic oil. Also, with most modern oils, and detergents and cleaners that are in them, you can actually go every 10,000 miles on regular dino oil and be fine.

I believe it was Jiffy Lube that started the 3,000 miles OCI many years ago as a marketing gimmick. That said, I still change my oil every 3,000 miles, but I also have OCD, and am quite particular about when things are done.

I used to own two 2.0 Jettas; one a '97 Jazz model and the other a '96 Trek Edition, that was somewhat modified, which I owned up until last month. For me, both were great cars. While the 2.0 is joked about being the 2.Slow, I actually miss the low end torque, as the 2.5 in my Outback is a bit more sluggish until the rev's climb.

Its the 2.5 5 Cylinder. Unknown if it came with synthetic. It does have Castrol over the oil filler cap.

My parents just got a BMW wagon, and that thing calls for a 15k OCI. Incredible.

30000 Kms (18 641 miles) interval on my VW T5 van but special oil ( specification: VW 503 00/506 00/506 01) i.e: Castrol SLX professional longtec VW longlife ll 0W - 30

The whole 3,000 mi OCI is purely a way to market more services that people don't need. All of the new Outbacks have 7,500 mile OCIs and it is very common to see 10-15k mile OCIs on cars in Europe. So don't believe the hype, 10k miles is perfectly reasonable with a good oil under normal conditions.

Subaru loose a lot in european car tests due to short service interval with only 15000 km ( 9 320 mi) interval while most other brands have at least 20000kms (12 427mi) -25000 kms (15 534 mi)-30000 kms ( 18 641mi) intervals

Subaru has in several countries "solved" it with 15000kms-30000 kms & 45000 kms ( or 1,2 & 3 year) services are free

Volkswagen in the US is offering free maintenance for 36k miles or 3 years. That means even the major services are covered, amazing I know.

A lot of european cars have much larger crankcases also. 6 Litres in a small engine would last longer than our 4 Litres.

To All,

I've followed Amsoil 25K or 1 year OCI since 98 on all my Subaru's wo/ any ill effects.
