CEL advice on a Mazda - Click HERE for Original Thread
mlmx52002
Hi Guys,

Let me start out and say its my grandma's car, I do the maintenance on it for the most part. So within the couple of months I have replaced the plugs, plug wires, both o2 sensors, and egr valve due to the CEL light. I had 2 misfire codes on cyl 3&4, an o2 code, and a egr code. The egr code came back and I am unsure how to proceed.

Basics on car
1997 Mazda Protege
1.6 Liter 4 Cyl
260k miles on orig engine, 2nd tranny and clutch.

Sorry for the essay I just explain things long.

When you replaced the EGR valve, did you clean out the ports when you had the valve off? Some left over carbon could have lodged in the EGR or gunked it up again so it won't open. Or the valve you got was bad. Just a couple thoughts. Running an intake system clean could help also.
ETC
seems common, try this, some potential fixes and explanations of why it codes.
