I just picked this thing up from the neighbor across the street. Does anyone know where any info can be found? I have been unable to find much info on this at all. I know it was made by Gilson for wards. About 30 years old. Has a Briggs and Stratton 16 horse single cylinder cast iron engine. I just had to take the engine out to remove the mouse nest under the shroud. I got the tractor and a snow blower with a front mount push blade for 250. Tractor runs super. Sat for two years plus, and I put a new battery in it and fresh gas. Popped right off and not even a hint of oil smoke at start up.

Wow that is nice. Man I remember montgomery ward but I was only about 5 years old when they had their stores. Does it have a model number on a nameplate anywhere? If it is like any box store stuff these days, it was actually made by someone else and just has a montgomery ward badge on it.
For those things, you can usually find the manual for the engine separately from the tractor.
Now all that said, you know there has to be a Montgomery Ward garden tractor forum out there somplace with die hard fans! |

Good deal. A single cylinder 16HP, electric start is a good thing. You have a fleet of 3 now?
We used to call it Monkey Ward when I was a kid visiting in Newport, Vermont. We did a yearly pilgrimage.
P.S. Gotta clean that white overspray from the headlights for blowing snow on those cold, dark winter nights. |

Yes the name plate indicates that it was made by Gilson Tractor Co. They were consumed by Lawnboy, who was later consumed by Toro. |

Yes I have three, but the little green turd in the back has a bad transaxle, with a great running 12horse Briggs. I sold my Simplicity a couple of years ago to get the Cub zero turn, then realized I need something to pull my sweeper and yard cart. I dont really plan on using it for anything but summer use for the yard card/wagon. |

Got a response from Toro corp. They consumed Lawnboy, who earlier consumed Gilson.
Here is what they wrote. Stand up company if you ask me
