How many here own Ruger 10/.22s?
The first semi-auto I ever shot was a stock Ruger 10/.22 my dad owned since he bought it new in the 1960s. One of my brothers had a Marlin 18-shot tube-fed rifle that I shot on occasion, but the Ruger had fewer problems with hang-ups and was pretty accurate for so small a carbine.
The Ruger has been my favorite plinker, and I love its versatility. I have one that I've added a folding stock and laser sight, and another I've added a bull barrel, Anschutz-type stock and massive scope. I know it's overkill, but I found a 6-20x with a 50+mm reticle on sale at Sportsmansguide made for centerfire rifles I use for my Ruger because of its high resolution. I sighted it at 100 yards from a bench rest and could zoom in with the 20x scope to see where I was hitting instead of using a spotting scope. It's kind of funny to be lobbing .22 LRs at a target at a distance.
I bought a few Eagle 25-round mags on sale, but I've found they haven't fed very well. I wonder if there are certain rounds that work better than others.
How have you modified yours (if you have at all)? What are your favorite accessories? |

| Yes I have one, it was my first rifle, it is the one with the stainless barrel. They are fun and cheap to shoot lots of rounds. I haven't done any mods to mine except get some extra 10 round magazines. Unfortunately here in the pr of NY greater than 10 round mags made after Sept 1994 are illegal. NY basically adopted the same wording as the clinton era weapons ban but with no sunset clause  . The larger 10/22 mags that people seem to say to work are the 'steel lips' type designs, the all plastic ones seem to have issues. |

i've got a tube feed bolt action marlin. i love it so far. takes a long time to burn threw a brick of .22lr.
i've got a 3-7x20 scope on it (cheapo) i have a hard time seeing my shots at 50 yds. i should look around for a better cheap scope. |

ditto, you really get what you pay for. I bought a $20 plastic lip 50 round mag and it was completely worthless.
I bought my second 10/22 at Gemco in California in the early 1980's just before they shut down. It was $99 and I thought just holding on to it would be a good idea. I don't think the price went up much more than $20 over the next 20 years. Even now at nearly $200, I would have been better off buying savings bonds.
OTOH, I bought a couple of AR-15 lower receivers in the early 80's and bought a kit to build my own A2 model for about $300 back then. It was fun learning about it and putting it together.
That was a good buy. |

| That's the first gun I ever bought and it's still one of my favorites to shoot, I've never had an issue with mine, and they even make Pink ones for the ladies, maybe I should get one for the wife. |

| hehe yes the pink ones are neat. They make really short pull pink ones too for the younger girls. I like the camo thumbhole stock but no $ really right now to go for somethign like that. |

I have a 10/22 with the stainless steel barrel and synthetic stock. It is one of my favorite guns of all time to shoot. I had the 25 round, 30 round, and 50 round clips.... The 30 survived the longest, I was too cheap to pay for the good "steel lips" clips. I added a small folding bipod, a 3x9 36mm scope (was made fun of for that), and mounted a big 3D Mag light on the right side of the stock for night firing. By some stroke of luck I managed to get it lined up so that it would shine the beam of light perfectly at 50-60 yards, looking through the scope at night, it looked like day. :-D I lived in Wyoming just about in the middle of nowhere at the time so you could shoot at a lot of things.
Wow that just brought back a lot of memories, thanks.... |

| Bought one a few yrs ago. Stainless, bull barrel, laminated stock. Mounted a fairly inexpensive Simmons Pro Air scope which was highly recommended at the time from the gurus over at rimfirecentral.com. Only mods were to replace the bolt buffer with a synthetic version, and replaced the stock hammer which really enhanced the rifle. (I highly recommend this on any model 10/22, and it's very cheap to do) |

My first semi-auto rifle was a 10/22, but I no longer own it. It was one of those deals where I bought it for $220 at my local sporting goods store, shot it a few times, and then started perusing the Midway USA and Brownells catalogs.
In the end I put like another $2,800 into it (including the scope). It shot great, but jesus christ!!!
I used to punch the targets at 250 yards with the thing, and none of the guys on the line would believe I was actually hitting the target. (At that range you can't really see the bullet holes even with a real nice spotting scope.)
I eventually sold that rifle and built a new one based on a Volquartzen receiver with thread-in barrel. Not sure it was worth the extra expense over the standarde bolt-on barrel 10/22, but it's still a nice rifle and a good trainer for new shooters. |

Wow-- 250 yards is a long way for a .22 LR carbine. I wonder what the arc of the bullet trajectory looks like at that distance.
I'm taking both of my 10/22s out the the Mojave this weekend for a little plinking practice. |

250 is definitely a long shot with .22. You get the typical "pop" of a muzzle report and more or less trust you are hitting the target. Then when a line break is called, make a mad dash out to your target to see how you did!
As far as my experience goes, I've only been able to make this distance with subsonic ammo. Can't hit the target with any of the super/trans sonic ammo (CCI Stinger etc). Federal Gold Medal Match all the way! |
