What do you use for a operating system,? Buttons thread on Internet bowers thread made me curious.
I use Linux, OpenSuse 11.1 64bit
Why? lIt's free and so are all of the office and photo editing programs for it. |

I JUST had to replace my hard drive. A Hitachi Deskstar with a well-known fault (geeks call it the "Deathstar").
Anyhoo, I decided I would like to minimize my Windows usage due to having to reinstall it three times this year from virus attacks that slipped past my antivirus. So I switched to Linux Mint and have never been happier.
It's free, incredibly fast, runs everything I want to run (except the latest games, so I do still have a Windows install on dual-boot), and it installed with ZERO CONFIG. Installation took like 15, 20 minutes and the OS was 100% up and running.
When I went to go install Windows it took me about four hours, plus I must have screwed something up punching in the S/N because now I'm getting the Windows Genuine "Advantage" nags. So glad I paid $150 for it so the only thing it's good for are games. |

I wish my work would switch from Windows to Linux. But that will never happen. How big of company do you work for? |

Currently Windows XP. But I switch back and forth with Linux (various flavors). I go to Linux when I get sufficiently annoyed a Windows (virus, other annoyances). After a while on Linux, I get annoyed with trying to get the apps I need running properly under Wine or VMware and switch back to Windows. I guess I'm never satisfied.
I all comes down to the fact that I prefer Linux (been using Unix professionally since 1983), but some of the apps I need run best under native Windows. |

~6000 full time employees. Our products use UNIX and Linux. We have a few Windows customers, but they are the minority. |

Vista 32 bit on the lap top. It sucks. Lots of compatibility issues. I'm about to dump it ans down grade to XP.
Vista 64 bit on the desk top. Seems to be working well. My old desk top had XP and it worked great.
Vista is just annoying with all the :27: security :16:
I would like to try Linux, but I'm not computer savvy enough to try.
XP at work. I had lots of problems fighting the "admin" because my work doesn't fit in his box. I finally threatened to shut down their flight operation on a legal point. So he isolated us on a separate server with "admin" privileges. |

I use OSX because my work is 60% Mac 40% Microsoft. My Macbook Pro allows me to run VMWare's Fusion to support both Mac and Microsoft users. I use XP on my Mac as my stable day to day operating system. 64 bit Windows 7, again on my Mac, is for evaluation and testing to see if we want to migrate there in the future. Debian is what runs my web server and is a command line only installation. |

Vista 32 on this laptop
XP on the other [wife's main work computer] and the old desktop.
I was hesitant to even try Vista but this Dell came with it. I've had basically 0 issues in the 10 mos or so that I've had it. Running avg free for virus and haven't had any virus/spyware problems. No blue screens of death and no compatibility issues with any programs I've tried to run.
My wife's Lenovo is essentially a clone of this dell and I don't notice much if any difference in speed as far as running programs, maybe a bit faster on startup but not by much.
Try Open Office for Word, Excel etc programs, free and works just as well. |

| Well I run Vista Home Premium on my desktop. It came with it and I am somewhat satisfied. My laptop runs XP Pro and will run XP until XP is as outdated as windows 98. I tried Vista on it and well lets say it wasn't pretty. |
