2004 EJ259 engine repair thread

I bought a 04 Outback with a broken timing belt for $400.

I'm in the early stages of fixing it.

Since I'm going to be installing a new timing belt what kit do most people use? Hopefully from rockauto.

My plan is to try a new belt if that does't work take off the heads and see the carnage. May just end up replacing the engine.

Thanks.

most people concentrate on trying to get Japanese bearings in the rollers.

OEM or NTN tensioner

OEM or Mitsuboshi belt

OEM or Aisin waterpump if doing it

some say OEM only on cam/crank seals (brown-colored?)

check rockauto, amazon, on ebay check; mizumoauto or autoeverything(?), , etc

fredbeansparts, subarugenuineparts, subaruparts4you etc are on-line dealers. Local dealer may match prices of on-line dealers.

the toothed idler is often in worse condition than the belt - most folks will replace all the idlers when they do the belt. If the car has a lot of miles (175-200K) or is of unknown background, doing the tensioner and probably the water pump is a good idea too.

it's an interference engine, just doing a belt slap is risky.

is that a 2004 regular EJ251,

or the weirdo 2004 EJ259 california spec?

(see build plate under the hood on the shock tower in front of the driver)

from the older EJ251 design, a
Ej259 is like half a step to the later EJ253,

so you get special heads, pistons, intake, exhaust as a single year thing. (and only on legacy and legacy outback)

not fun to find major parts for,....and may present unique diagnostic issues (always have to state it is a cal -spec car,...when doing work, as it has unique sensors).

could have a Ej251,...a EJ259....or a EJ253.

I posted pics of each of them here:

(notice the plastic airbox, and intake differences between the 3).
