Got my letter that Subaru of Canada decided to extend the CVT warranty to 10 years 160k kms.
Took them a while to follow the SOA decision. (100,000 miles US)
Haven’t seen a thing from SCI...yet. ...found out it covers my model...I am about to have my propeller shaft replaced. Too bad that isn’t part of this extension...
That's good to hear. I haven't received a letter yet. Can anyone share a link?
I'm only at about 64,500 kms but was planning to drain/fill the CVT myself next summer at around it's 5th year anniversary (bought it new summer 2013 and have not changed the fluid yet). Now that I'm hearing about this extended warranty I'm wondering if I should instead have the dealer do it, just in case it craps out in the future and they blame me for not changing it out properly. My local dealer does not inspire confidence and neither do the ones that are 50-75 clicks away. Maybe I should try a local independent shop that at least allows me to watch while they do the work.
Agree with you I had the same intention but with the Canadian cvt maintenance recommendation at 100,000 km better off going to the dealer and get it from them even if it’s more expensive . You should use their cvt fluid and this is what is costly . I am doing my oil change by myself with a quick-valve and buying my filter from the dealership to have a paper trace and getting my oil when it’s 50% off at CT now 85,000km . I will have it done only for the cvt and differentials just before the 100,000km and ask for an inspection before the end of the 5 year warranty. Just if there some gasket leak or else ...Did you watch how you do it on YouTube ? Touchy and the saving are if you use valvoline cvt oil and have à clean environment cvt are sensitives to contaminants...
Since we have had the car I have had the tranny fluid done twice. With the problems that could arise my preventative maintenance will be to do this every couple of years...especially now that I am putting on almost 1,000 km a week. remember...it doesn’t all come out as some is left in the torque converter and other nooks and crannies.
Thanks, cmonteir. Much appreciated. I got my letter this past Friday. Great news. I'm still not sure if I should have a dealer change out the CVT fluid or do it myself. I'll see how things play out next summer.
The Subaru philosophy and brand statement, “Confidence in Motion,” speaks to who we are, what we believe and where we intend to go. Not coincidentally, it also speaks to who our customers are and why they choose to drive a Subaru — it unites them with all members of the Subaru team and everyone who has a stake in our brand. Confidence has been a key ingredient in every Subaru model ever built and the meaning behind our brand promise “Confidence in Motion” is and has always been the heart and soul of our company.
With this philosophy in mind, we have implemented a CVT Warranty Enhancement Program on certain 2010 to 2015 model year vehicles for a period of 10 years/160,000km's (whichever comes first) from the date it was sold to the first retail purchaser at an authorized Subaru Dealer in Canada.
If your covered vehicle already exceeds 160,000 km as of December 1, 2017, the CVT Warranty Enhancement Program will continue to cover your transmission with unlimited mileage until December 1, 2018.
Terms and Conditions of the Warranty Enhancement Program:
The Enhancement Program is effective immediately and requires no action on your part.
All other warranty terms, limitations and conditions listed in your Warranty/Maintenance and Roadside Assistance Booklet apply, including the automatic transfer of the program to any new owners of your vehicle.
The Warranty Enhancement Program does not limit or restrict coverage for vehicles within the original 3 year/60,000 Complete Vehicle Warranty, 5 year/100,000 km Major Component Warranty, or vehicles currently covered by a Subaru Protection Plan.
I am from Saguenay but many members are from the Montreal region as you can see on this thread. Vasiok,Vwluca and i know NerdyGuy and LuciferUPNorth who are from the south Shore Brossard ? Anyway the mechanics from the dealer are certified and fully equipped...You can ask them if they get a good service but we never know which mechanics is going to do the job in the shop... this is really basic stuff ...i would worry more for a major fix like the torque converter repair ...but for this kind of job ... I am really confident having any dealer do it. The biggest in Montreal is John Scotty Subaru and they a well quoted for the sales but I don’t know for the service. Regards ...
Nice! Thanks for this. I just bought a used '12 with 93k so I fall well within the limit, and I confirmed it on subaru.ca. Didn't even know about this until I saw the post. Cheers!
You could always ask them about it? you didn't mention which transmission you have (or year/engine size). The Tr690 does take more fluid....
As for you don't know what to do, you don't have much option if you want it done at the dealer for peace of mind (if something goes wrong...). I had mine done a few years ago for 318 tax in at a dealership, $50 a year... The engine maintenance costs at least $100 a year by comparison, just as important.
I guess you’re right about having peace of mind especially with the extended trans warranty, being retired and an avid diy I try to contemplate most things I have to do as a diy project but I thinkI’ll leave this one alone, thanks for the advice.
