Car & Driver says the towing capacity of the 2020 is 3500 lbs (800 more than the 3.6R)...

And so does the official Subaru page:

It also says the HP for the 2020 is 182, not 175.

Edit: The 3500lb towing capacity may be only for the XT trim, but still...I think it makes sense to compare the top end option of both model years.

Differences between 2016 2.5i LTD and 3.6R LTD

I apologize if this has been covered before; the search function did not reveal any prior.

I read the excellent and rather complete treatise at on the Outback 2016 by Joe Spitz. A very comprehensive analysis as near as I can tell and if there are comments about it, I would love to be pointed to those threads.

I am listing here the differences I found in that page, between the 2016 Outback 2.5 Limited and the 3.6 Limited.

2.5i Redline @ 6000RPM; active grille shutters; compression 10.3:1
175HP @ 5800RPM; 174lb-ft @4000RPM
3.6R Redline @ 6400RPM; no active grille shutters; compression 10.5:1
256HP @ 6000; 247lb-ft @ 4400RPM

2.5i: 5.1quarts of 0-20W synthetic
3.6R: 6.9 quarts of 5-30W oil, synthetic recommended

2.5i: 8.0 quarts
3.6R: 6.9 quarts

2.5i: 110 amps
3.6R: 130 amps

2.5i: 2nd generation CVT: Range 3.581 - 0.618
3.6R: 2nd year 1st gen CVT: High torque; Range 3.105 - 0.542

2.5i: Single tailpipe
2.6R: Dual tailpipe

2.5i Top speed 150MPH
3.6R Top speed 160MPH

3.6R: HID low beam

2.5i: 2,700lbs
3.6R: 3,000lbs

Curb weight:
