  1. Alternator spark

    Problems & Maintenance
Yeah I also learned the hard way to always disconnect the battery before doing any work. Literally step one in any major maintenance procedure will say "remove ground from battery". I would also suggest tying or tucking the cable out of the way because I've had my formed cable fall back into...
  2. Another airbag recall extension (Gen 4)

    Problems & Maintenance
Just to play devil's advocate here, what would you propose they should've done? Other than not manufacture faulty airbags in the first place of course. With millions of vehicles all needing a fix, the option of replacing them all with a corrected unit was not possible. I don't even think they...
  3. Passenger seat belt buckle backwards

    Problems & Maintenance
LMGTFY How to fix a twisted seatbelt This is a fairly common thing to happen. I had one friend who would consistently twist my seat belt every single time he drove my car. Something in the way that he pulled the buckle down would twist it. There is definitely enough room to rotate it within...
  4. 2011 Outback display lights like a Christmas tree

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
Especially if it has less than 100k miles. If it's a transmission issue it should be covered under warranty
  5. About 150 RPM drop shifting from park to drive

    Problems & Maintenance
Fair enough. I know that some people just buy a cheap android phone just to run the Active OBD app. You don't actually need to have any cell service turned into it, and this way it can always stay with the car and you don't have to tie up your phone for gauges. As far as iphone apps that show...
  6. About 150 RPM drop shifting from park to drive

    Problems & Maintenance
Are you using an iphone or android? I'm not certain about Carscanner, but most OBD apps aren't able to display Subaru CVTF temp as a standard option. I know for certain ActiveOBD for android is a Subaru specific app that has CVTF temp display, but it's only for android. Maybe someone else can...
  7. 2.5i CVT Issues

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
I've only had one dealer tell me to actually change the fluid, and they are the ones I will be trusting with anything I require of them. The service manager mentioned that Subaru of Canada recommends changing the CVT and Diff fluid at 100,000km or ~60k miles. That's what I'm going to go with...
  8. About 150 RPM drop shifting from park to drive

    Problems & Maintenance
No worries at all. I'm probably as hungry for answers as you are, seeing as how I also just bought a 2014 with a fresh valve body on the CVT. Trying to make it last, and I think it has the original fluid in it still. The Subaru Select Monitor is: a factory service quality OBD2 reader and scan...
  9. Reliability these days?

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
Me too. This '14 that I bought is far and away the lowest mileage car I've ever owned. In fact, I didn't even blink at the fact that it had 128k on it when I bought it. I'm also hoping the head gasket thing is fixed with the FB engine, but time will tell. Same with the CVTs. There just aren't...
  10. Reliability these days?

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
It's also worth remembering that this forum is filled with problems. Even more specifically, problems of people who think to consult the internet for help. Not many folks register and make a post just to say their car has been trouble free for 100k. I'd venture to say that the majority of...
  11. About 150 RPM drop shifting from park to drive

Here is the relevant FSM section on the process for a TR580
  12. 2012 Outback 2.5 premiu P0353 code problem that dealer can't solve

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
You may have to leave it with the dealer and have them try to recreate the problem.
  13. About 150 RPM drop shifting from park to drive

    Problems & Maintenance
The transmission in the 2012 has the valve body on the bottom, and it's replacement requires draining the pan, so yes it would include a drain and fill. The torque converter holds significantly less fluid, maybe a quart or so, and doesn't need the pan dropped to replace. No drain and fill included.
  14. Reliability these days?

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
I had to buy a 2014 with 128k miles with a very thorough maintenance history. It had the CVT valve body fail and replaced at 126k. Even a DIY replacement costs about a grand. Glad that the PO dealt with that for me. Only other non wear items that the PO replaced in 126k were wheel bearings. All...
  15. 2.5i CVT Issues

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
Also, did they specifically say what failed or what codes it displayed? Some dealers may be quick to replace the whole transmission, but it's usually either the torque converter, or the solenoid in the valve body that need replacing. Both of those jobs are almost 10 times less expensive than...
  16. What is the best oil/filter?

    Irreconcilable Differences
I was super excited when I saw the Rotella for gassers in the 0w-20 used by my new to me 2014 OB. I've used the diesel Rotella in my 85 GL with great results. Less consumption, and a generally smoother sounding engine compared to Castrol/M1 in that car. I've put about 5k on the OB since I...
  17. Overheating

    Problems & Maintenance
That could be the issue. Aftermarket thermostats are generally a no no in subarus. The Stant Xact is "xactly" like OEM, but any other brand could cause issues. If the thermostat was indeed the issue, it could also cause a head gasket to fail. Does it overheat at highway speeds, or sitting...
  18. What Brand CVT fluid to use & why?

    Oil and Fuel Discussion
A 2012 2.5 liter outback has the TR690 transmission with the valve body on the bottom, which uses the Subaru CVT-II fluid. The TR580 uses the same fluid, and is found in 2.5 liter Outbacks starting September 2014. The high torque CVT fluid is for the transmission on the 3.6 liter engine. The...
  19. All seasons for 2015 Subaru Outback Limited

    Wheels, Tires, Brakes, & Suspension
I got a set of four GT Radial IcePros for $496 installed out the door with tpms from Discount tire. Very pleased with them so far. Even cheap winter tires are better than brand new all seasons if the temps are below freezing, snowy or not. I believe my General Altimax RT43s were around 700...
  20. How many miles has your cvt been trouble free?

    Gen 4: 2010-2014
2014. PO had the control valve body replaced at 126k miles. I bought it at 128 and have put 3k on it. Planning on doing a CVTF drain and fill ASAP because the shop that worked on it for it's whole life showed no fluid service. I guess I'll never know if servicing the CVTF even once or twice...
