Hey everyone.

I have an '01 Outback H6 VDC. This morning I started driving her to work and almost imediatly I started smelling a burning smell, like when flourescent light ballast goes. Shortly thereafter the check engine and battery lights came on, and the power steering died. I limped back home and there she sits.

She has 110,000km on her. I bought her about 5,000km ago. I have all of the maintenance records since purchase and there has never been any electrical problems. There is a factory remote starter which I use regularly without fail. I did not use it this morning.

Does this sound like something you've heard of before? She'll get towed to the dealership tomorrow morning but I thought I would see what I could find out here.

Thanks, Craig

alternator $$$$

tensioner or idler pulley bearings $$

2-part crank pulley $$$

just educated guesses - how old is the serpentine accessory belt?

Most likely the tensioner or idler pulley bearing seized or broke, and the burning smell was a cooking belt.
