Good Day.

I have a 2005 Outback XT Limited that I would like to sell.

Details:
- 2.5 Turbo with Auto Trans approx 160k
-Black with Black Leather loaded
-Good Tread
-Panoramic Sunroof (has crack but does not leak)
-Weather Tech Liners front and rear

I am selling this as the turbo went out and I got a NEW replacement from EMUSA and I cannot get it to seal correct on the bottom and I am tired of messing with it.

Just before the turbo went out I had the following done (with receipts):
-New Turbo (and also replaced oil feed screen)
-New Intake gaskets
-New water pump/timing belt maintainence
-New PCV valves and hoses

Overall the body has some minor dings and scrapes but is in good condition with no rust.

I will take some photos and get them uploaded.

I would think where it is you would be able to sell it on craigslist, vs. a worldwide forum.

(and some roughneck that knows exactly what it is, and the fun of it,

...vs. hopping around in a big beast pickup as ones' only vehicle.

edit: @traildogck how much are such vehicles worth in your expert buying experience? (fixed,...or needing a little).

Craigslist it. My 05 OBXT wasn't on 4 hrs and the first responder drove 3hrs from Michigan and took it home that day. I've sold a ton of vehicles most all on Craigslist pretty quickly.

I would agree.

This car has me wondering a bit. Can't get the turbo to fit? Is it the right one? Or is it the fact that any gaskets that come with these cheap new turbos are about as worthless as tin foil. I think they are tin foil. Or stainless steel foil. Either way, they are junk. GrimmSpeed and Vibrant make decent OEM style gaskets and then there is the OEM. You can spend $50 on OEM turbo gaskets and they are one time use.

I think the price is OK, If the turbo truly is all the issue is and the block isn't a ticking bomb. Maybe start at $4500 on CL and sell for 3800.

I listed 05 OBXT for $4500 and let it go for $3800 last summer with 104,000 on clock. Those Chinese complete turbos scare me but I did use a Chinese center section that I will say was a high quality precision piece that functioned perfectly until I sold it 3 years later still working as new. Factory gaskets on reinstall with all the pertinent cleanup, replacement parts and mods to prevent future issues with turbo was key.

Guy buys it for his college kid who has no mech skills. I almost didn't sell it to him but really not my call. I will say the guy never called me cussing me out so there is that. That car is not for the average anybody with its tempermental qualities and it was getting to much for me to keep it reliable. I never trusted it really on long trips. Miss it though, it is the prettiest OB Subaru ever made. Oh well, enjoying my 17 3.6R.

Over in the BMW turbo community (N54/N55) we know all about chinese turbo's and there was a very long discussion on the quality of them. The tl;dr is that 1) they may not be as advertised (different cartridges, turbines, etc) and 2) they aren't balanced properly and may only last 20k. On our Subie's the turbos are easy to replace so it's not that big of a deal, but on the 535/335/Z4/X5's etc it could take 10-20 hours so it's not something you'd want to do frequently.

To put it in perspective, a pair of Chinese turbo's for the N54 runs about $900; $2000 for OEM quality, and $3500 for stage 2.

Ultimately, it's a crapshoot when ordering a turbo from AliExpress/Ebay. Order two and one might be good for 100k and the second one for 5k. Buying from a state-side specialist ... you might still get a chinese turbo, but at least you're paying someone knowledgable to verify it has the right parts, the tolerances are OK, and they'll balance it. Also, the suppliers in China working with your specialist have an incentive to keep working with that specialist i.e. repeat business. Plus you'll get a warranty and support from your specialist.

Knock on wood .. I haven't had to replace a turbo yet .. but when (have 175k on it) I'll be paying a little extra to get one from a known good supplier.
