When's the last time you checked the fluid in the rear differential? Your binding could be inside the diff causing a lock up instead of slip which would also explain the tire skidding; its moving at the same rate as the opposite wheel when it should be turning slower. This could also be what you are feeling where you think the pressure is changing, the point at which the bind is let go when the torque is reduced.
