Possibly a busted spring, or it has been out of adjustment for so long that the cable fell off the hook on one side and is just knocking around loose. You can get kits with all the parts and just use what you need to rebuild it.
Yeah, I figured when I'd dig into it when I did my brakes (upgrade) and figured I'd grab a cable to have just in case.
[can always return it if it can be repaired]

Yeah the LGT front swap is very easy. You just need calipers, brackets, pads & rotors from an LGT.

Another resurrection...

At 60,000 I'm getting a vibration in the brakes, so I want to go straight to LGT brakes.

Are the calipers really different, or is it just the rotors and brackets that need to be changed?

I only ask because when I upgrade my Impreza to WRX-spec brakes, I only needed rotors and brackets (the calipers were exactly the same).

Yes the calipers are different. No brackets are required.

It's very easy. Just go on Rock Auto and order Legacy GT Calipers front and rear and of course get rotors and pads. Everything will just bolt right up. Then you can send back your old calipers for a core refund, so it ends up the calipers are only like $50 each.

All the parts cost is like around $500 (after core refund)

is the vibration the reason you want to upgrade?

ANY brakes can have uneven pad deposition and vibrate.

I'd like more fade-free braking performance, anyway... We load this car to the gills (with HD rear springs) and drive in the mountains to go camping, and I tow sometimes.

I know that I could attempt to solve the vibration issue by having the rotors turned, but since they're original, I think I've gotten my use out of them...

Has anyone done this? I can save money by buying these parts used, but buying them from Rock Auto (or similar) will get me parts that have known good seals and proper lubrication (ready to bolt on, don't have to rebuild). From Rock Auto's policy on cores it states "Cores must be complete, rebuildable, fit the same vehicle application and be returned in the box the remanufactured part came in."

The swap itself is dead easy, no more difficult than a brake job + bleed.

You may have your cores disqualified by that statement you found. But that's only if they notice. I would call that a coin toss. So there might be that extra expense.

Thank you both for the quick response. I think I will just go with some used ones then. At worst it is about $5.50 (seals and pin boots) per caliper to rebuild it. That plus a used caliper is still about $10 cheaper than a reman'd one, and I don't have to worry about a rejected core. These cars aren't that old and most likely I won't have to rebuild any calipers. I can put the money towards good rotors and pads.

as long as the parts look correct, the person doing the check in will not care and give you the core credit.

People do the same thing to swap Taurus brakes from the pre 2001 small brake rotors to post 2001 (+gen3 sho) larger brake rotors.

old thread resurrected - but applicable to me.

LGT setup fits under OEM wheels? I run OZ Ultraleggera for the summer tires but OEM wheels with the winters on my 06.
