I just recently purchased an 09 outback and have been experiencing a lot of difficulty getting the trunk open. When I use the key fob to unlock the trunk nothing happens. I’ve made sure all the doors are unlocked but the trunk still won’t open. The handle on the outside feels a little odd; different from my 04 outback. It kind of rocks back and forth and doesn’t feel like it is catching. I can get the trunk open from the inside by putting the back seats down and climbing in with a screw driver to expose a mechanism that manually unlocks the trunk. I thought that fixed it but after a short time the trunk went back to not opening from the outside like normal. Does anyone know what parts I need to order to fix this issue? If it helps at all, this car has some mild damage from salt on the roads since it’s from Wisconsin. I’m thinking that may be a factor in the trunk not opening. Thanks so much for any input and advice shared. I really look forward to hearing what you all think.

If the latch mechanism isn't unlocking, but when unlocked (by going from the inside and moving the lock lever) the handle on the outside works fine, then it's likely there's a broken wire (or wires) in the flexible rubber tube between the rear hatch and the car body, at the upper right. It's a known failure. https://www.subaruoutback.org/forum...-replace-05-outback-hatch-wiring-harness.html covers what happens and a possible fix. (It's one of quite a few threads about problems with lights, rear wiper, etc in the hatch that don't work, and are caused by broken wires.)

I’m not having any other electrical issues that I know of, but I have seen some videos on YouTube of people replacing those wires because of trunk problems. Is there any way for me to troubleshoot this? How do I know that’s it?

Look at the thread I linked above. It shows where the problem tends to be apparent, and there's discussion about repair and/or replacement. Also, search here for other threads dealing with broken wires to the rear hatch or other functions in the hatch not working. It's definitely been discussed quite a few times.

Okay, here's a few for starters:
