m over 158,000 miles and its never been changed.
Any help would be appreciated.
oh wow - yes, change it. if the belt breaks it will most certainly bend valves.
they're really easy to do - get the ebay timing kits with all new pulleys and tensioners. theimportexperts has good quality kits...but anything will be better than 10+ year old 150,000 mile greaseless pulleys. most folks favor the kits with the AISIN (Japan i believe) branded water pumps. i usually just buy the ebay its and then buy the water pumps from Subaru....but from here on out i'm going to figure out which ebay kits/vendors have the brand stuff i want.
If the original owner had changed the timing belt, I'm sure he would have told you since it would be a selling point. I don't think it's unlikely that the components including the belt have lasted 50% longer then the mgf recommendations. That kind of safety factor seems about right.
My '99 EJ25 had its original pulleys at 252,000 miles when knocking rod end, 2nd set of failed head gaskets, oil leaks and consumption meant it had to go. (Got a replacement JDAM EJ25 motor). The Tensioner and water pump were changed at 134,000 miles when the headgaskets gave up and there was some mild overheating. The tensioner was leaking fluid. If the pulleys spin freely and quietly with the belt removed then why change them? The belt must be changed every 60,000 miles -I let it go to 70,000 miles once because I needed the car for work (110,000 miles in 30 months hauling tools and equipment) and it looked pretty worn when I changed it. I use Gates timing belts - shop around on line.
