I have a 2001 Subaru LL Bean 3.0 H6 that has a blown head gasket. My question is that I thought all 2001 thru 2004 3.0 H6 engines were the same. I had run across a 2003 3.0 H6 motor but for some reason, I see the 2001 excluded from the range of years of 2001-2004. They seem to have 2002 thru 2004 lumped together and the 2001 seperate. My question is if there really is a difference??? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

A blown head gasket on an H6? That's pretty unusual!

As far as I know, there are no major differences between the engines (nothing that will be incompatible with the ECU). I believe there were minor improvements to things here and there, but not too much different.

hmmmm, didn't the 04s get variable lift valves?

my 03 does not have avcs. I'd 'expect' all EZ30D to be interchangeable.

04 engine could require a different harness and ecu.
2005 certainly would.
not sure when the US got EZ30R

Yes, it is unusual, but unheard of. I read some other threads where it has happened. I see the part number listed for the 2001 model is 300-91030A and the 2002-2004 years is 300-91030B. What that difference is and if it makes a difference would be nice to know.

where are you located, is your old engine for sale and how much? i have two H6 vehicles and wouldn't mind having a parts engine around.

they are interchangeable across those years. at most, if your intake manifold is different, just bolt your 2001 intake up to the 2003 engine.

i don't know the differences between the two - try Subaru's opposed forces website and it should delineate the differences between the 2001 and 2002+.

My 2004 still has the EZ30D, so I don't think the US got the R until 2005.
