I have an opportunity to buy a 2003 outback with a bad motor but I am COMPLETELY new to the subaru world. My questions are where would i go to get a replacement motor (websites?) and what should i be aware of - I can get the rig good and cheap but I dont want to get into something that will blow up into really expensive.

The rest of the rig checks out, just the motor is gone.

Any help or ideas is awesome!:29:

junkyard motors are another source. Sometimes you can find individuals parting-out a wreck.

depending on what's wrong with the motor in question, and depending on your skills and available time, rebuilding the motor yourself is a possibility.

If you post your city, someone here may be able to suggest a mechanic or local-to-you junkyard or rebuilder that might have an engine.

junkyards or private sales. Hearing before it's taken out is the best think you can do, and doing all the timing belt headgasket etc. stuff before hand. $1,500 installed is about right for a decent 150k engine.
