2005 Outback XT. 103K. Appears to have been run on non-synthetic exclusively until now. Banjo bolt w/screen replaced @ 102K.

I understand the current recommendation is synthetic with an OCI of 3750 miles or 3.75 months.

My question is -- how critical is the 3.75 months?

I don't normally drive this vehicle that much, so it could be 6-months or more before I hit 3750 miles.

I also have low usage and that is considered 'severe duty'.(because moisture isn't driven out by heating to operating temp regularly, and seals may not be wetted regularly, etc.) So, I often must use the 'calendar' side of the schedule.

I don't know that you could be faulted for waiting 6 months or 3750 whichever came first.

ultimately, you must make yourself comfortable with your decision.

I'd use a good yet inexpensive syn oil, such as Quaker State Ultimate Durability (about $20/jug at WalMart), and change every 6 months in your application.

I would recommend the OEM filter if you can get them at a decent price, as not much else meets the factory by-pass spec.
