While driving it shifts smoothly from 1st into second but 2nd into 3rd is delayed and will slam hard if I'm too aggressive on the gas pedal. Any ideas?

The car has 160,000 miles, and is new to me but according to the person I bought it from the transmission fluid was just changed a few months ago(not sure what was used). I checked the dipstick..fluid looked clean but level was to high(would that cause an issue?).

Yes, overfilling can be a problem.

It was checked at idle, correct? That matters. Thread here:

And there have been some issues with bleeding air after a fluid change; since this was the previous owner who said this was done, you might look into it. Thread here:
