2013 Premium Base Radio - Any Factory Upgrade Options

9627 Views 11 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  MarkF
I have a new 2013 OB Premium with the base radio. I was wondering if it is possible to upgrade to any of the 2012 or 2013 factory units? Or is the wiring different?

My biggest issue is that the bluetooth onmy radio can only pair with one phone at a time. I carry a personal phone and a work phone and would love a unit that pair with 2 phones at the same time.

Adding tweeties used to be the first choice(cheap&easy) but I think the '13 base now has them. There is also a factory Subwoofer available that goes under the drivers seat.
2013 OB available subwoofer is powered by an integrated amplifier and mounts under driver’s seat. H630SAJ000 *NOT compatible with Harmon Kardon audio(denoted on speaker grilles) & Navigation equipped vehicles. Clarification

Thanks for those responses. I need to clarify my question.

I'm not looking to upgrade as in better sound. I was curious if any of the other Factory Head Units will swap into my 2013 Premium or is the wiring in the 2013 base Premium not compatible with 2011 or 2012 or 2013 other factory HU?
Couldn't you use (call transfer) I don't think you can pair two different phones on the subaru at the same time, you can pair them both but only one will ring when carrying both at the same time, if that makes any sense
According to my owners manual the base radio can only pair one phone at a time. The next upgraded radio can pair 2 audio devices and 6 phones. Yes only one would ring and talk at a time, but i wouldn't have to actively select and re-pair the desired phone.
Fujitsu Ten makes the radios and media electronics for the Outbacks in 2013. You may check with them on potential upgrades. The radio in the premium plays certain music really well and sounds good, but other music comes through with buzzing bass and even if you turn down the base it sounds very odd. The actual head units may not need to be replaced and rather you could upgrade speakers and add amplifiers. I've heard the radio in the limited is not much better in terms of balance
Subaru's stereo options are all pretty lousy. Would you consider an aftermarket head unit?

IIRC the 2011,12 and 13 all have different wiring harnesses to the HU and steering wheel. I think they changed manufacturers in there somewhere also.

That's what my research has been impying, I was looking for a definitive answer. I guess I'll pull my stock non-HK unit and take a picture of the back and compare that to the HK 2012 (non-nav) units that seem to be readily available all over the net.

My goal is to get unit that syncs to 2 phones simultaneously. I only listen to news radio so I don't need improved sound, just a real good bluetooth interface and bluetooth sound and mic quality.

Again from memory, I can't recall any Gen4 HU that will allow two phones active at the same time. Last one synced is active.

So my question, is then is the pairing information for the second phone still stored and I can manually swap on the fly or is the paring information for the second phone lost? On my phone only one phone's pairing information can be stored.
