2022 Outback - count me in for a third windshield

If you breathe on Subaru glass it cracks. Both times little pinpricks that I never even knew happened graduated into massive cracks.

Meanwhile you can take a pebble sized chunk out of my Ford or Jeep and I never had a problem.

Maybe I'll try OEM glass this time because whatever crap Subaru is using doesn't cut it.

They are trending towards making ugly evs anyways, not like I was going to buy another.

We elected to purchase the Crystal Fusion windshield protection (a treatment that claims to "bond" the windshield to make it stronger, which I don't necessarily believe), which also includes replacement and repair coverage. I called my insurance agent before buying it and she told me that if I could get it for less than $200/year, it would be worth it (vs. filing a comprehensive claim through them). I was able to negotiate the price down to just below that. We went to the dealership to have it applied and on the WAY HOME, a rock hit our windshield and left a dime-sized chip toward the bottom. I filed a claim, and within a week they told me where to take it for a repair. When they were done, they called the Crystal Fusion rep and they paid them over the phone.

I was definitely skeptical, but I had heard so many reports of how fragile these windshields are that I figured it was worth the risk. After my first claim going very smoothly, I'm glad I have the coverage!

I just replaced my windshield and it had a pinprick like yours. Looking at simple fracture mechanics a "pinprick" (pinpoint) load like ours on a windshield will do more harm than a nice round pebble. That is why the emergency glass braking tools have a fine point on them - it allows a very concentrated "pinprick" load on the glass to shatter it.

This is what years of being an engineer analyzing broken stuff has done to me...

Meanwhile, also look into non-OEM windshields like Pilkington (SafeLite installed Pilkington on my Outback), which seem to have better quality than OEM. SafeLite also re-calibrates EyeSight, so that is not an issue.

Aftermarket glass is way more durable in my experience.

I went through three OEM Carlex windshields on my 2021, they all randomly cracked without any impacts. Finally got an aftermarket PGW windshield and it's been smooth sailing ever since.

That's great to hear. 👍
In November 2022 we purchased a 2021 certified pre-owned Outback Premium and it has a Pilkington windshield installed. When using the adaptive cruise control with lane centering the vehicle bounces from shoulder to centerline at about a 2 second interval. Two different Subaru dealer service advisors have told me the aftermarket windshield could be interfering with Eye-Sight and causing the pogoing. In addition, the service advisors said Subaru doesn't allow them to install aftermarket windshields on certified pre-owned vehicles.
Anybody else having a pogo bounce when using Eye-Sight Lane Keep Assist with aftermarket windshields?

The dealers are likely making an excuse on the windshield so they don't have to look at it. There are many reports of the lane centering being terrible and pulling even with the stock windshield.

On my 3rd too. 1st one happened 2 mo after buying new. 3rd was aftermarket.

Had similar issues with my 2017 OB, among other things. This one will be my last Subaru for sure.

I have it with the stock Carlex one. It's not perfect, I don't know where people got the idea that self driving cars will ever be good, let alone these computer assist features. My favorite is when it does it when you're on the highway right next to a semi truck.

There's probably a reason why they use Carlex in the main windshield and no where else, and the Carlex always breaks.
Safelite uses Pilkington. They replaced the windshield in our 2021 on Thursday. I tested ours today and it works fine. I would find a Safelite dealer and see if they can recalibrate the system. They maybe able to search the vin to determine if they made the repairs.
I have a Pilkington windshield on mine for the past 10 months. No issues with Eye Sight and LKA. The only question is if it was calibrated after the windshield was replaced. That was performed on mine after it was replaced by the same glass company that did the change.
Is there anyways for you to know if the windshield was recalibrated?
My lane centering sucks on my Outback from the start, it goes from side to side in my opinion. My prior RAV4 performed it perfectly. I never use it on the Outback as its so annoying.

My 2015 Outback cracks without any rock chips or any hits. I know this because after about 40 days in storage I have a fresh crack coming up the center of the windshield. Since 2015, I'm at about 2 years each glass and cannot see any hits.

I don't know if it's correct to make that a blanket statement. My local Safelite shop clearly told me that they don't use Pilkington and that further, I didn't get to choose what brand they would use. I went to a well-respected local shop and got a PGW. We'll see.
yep!!! on my 3rd also. first died from gravel at 1200 miles, replaced with Safelite, which cracked a few hundred miles later... replaced with aftermarket, heard a lot of tinks and pingd, but no cracks, in another 10000 miles. GFY Safelite.

and yeah the eyesight has anxiety issues, and the lane following would get me pulled over for a breath test! sheesh, turned off all the time. 2022 Outback base model.
Bouncing is normal behavior. It does nothing I would recognize as "centering", it simply stays between the two lines. Better hope both lines keep going forever, am I right? :)
I don't see why it can't calculate the midpoint, but for now it is just as bad as you describe. I've turned off steering assists at my wife's request, leave on only the warning.

Blanket or not, that is what Safelite installed in our OB last week.
My point was the owner who bought a used car has a problem. Safelite may be able to help. They can search the VIN and determine if it was installed by a Safelite repair station.
