I have been doing tons of research on the 2013 outback.

My questions are:


I read a lot about piston slap and a noisy engine.
Does this happen with all the engines in the 4th gen outback?

Or

Is this just the normal sound of how the subaru engine is?

Are there flaws to the engine?

Will this engine last for as many miles as subaru claims with minimal replacements?

Subaru's have a distinctive sound. Proponents call it a growl, detractors call it a moan. Flaws? None that have showed up yet on the newest version. Gen 4's are starting to get to higher mileage and don't seem to have any problems. With proper maintenance you will be good to go for a long-long time.

My early 10 with the last EJ series engine update is smooth and quiet. I'm not sure about the FB series. There have been reports on both the Forester and Impreza forums of some folks with oil consumption and the Impreza's engine IMO is unrefined and noisy. I do know the chain in the FB is a little noisier than the belt in the EJ. Initial reports from people on the 14 Forester is both 2.5 and 2.5XT models have been they are quiet.

Do a three year lease and don't worry about it. That is what warranties are for.
